I think that the above quotation from Kidder is very important, and is a good point for all educators to remember. The part of the quotation that stands out to me the most says, "but we can't necessarily see that engagement" (Kidder, 2011). As teachers, we sometimes have an idea in our minds of what the perfect parent looks like and acts like. However, just as all students are different, all parents are different are parent their own children differently. This quotation reminded me that I need to remember that not all parents will demonstrate their engagement in their child's education the same way... and that's okay! It is my role as a teacher to support my students and communicate with the parents on a regular basis to discuss ways to support their children at home. Once I have done that, I have to sit back and let the parents be parents.

I agree with the quotation above from Annie Kidder. Parents play a huge role in the education and success of their children. The encouragement, support, assistance, guidance and care that is provided in the home environment plays a huge role in the development of a child's confidence as a student.

Unfortunately, not all parents can, do and are able to provide the necessary support to their children. This, of course, can have a negative effect on the children's growth and success as a learner.

We as teachers need to be aware of our students home lives (and what's in their "backpacks"). If a student is missing that positive support from a parent, it is our job, as teachers, to work on building up that parent communication and encouraging support from the parents, while also stepping in to provide extra support to the child.

I believe that this Standard of Practice applies to parent engagement. As teachers, it is our job to recognize that our students will achieve best when there is a shared responsibility and leadership role with parents. It is through this collaboration that students are able to truly experience success. Teachers should continue to work on creating open lines of communication with parents as a way of emphasizing the shared responsibilities and leadership.

I believe that the Ethical Standard of Practice of Trust and Respect applies to the topic of parent engagement. In order for parents and teachers to work together, there needs to be a mutual trust and mutual respect. Parents need to trust that their child's teacher is using the appropriate care to help their child succeed and respect the teacher's professional judgement. In the same way, the teacher needs to trust that the parent can provide appropriate support at home and respect the parents' level of involvement and engagement (knowing that engagement doesn't look the same for all parents)
