Latino: confusion, always navigating through identities

Experiences: Can be difficult to determine how you feel about yourself because one group may consider you non-white and another considers white.

·        Growing up/being educated only around white people vs. growing up in a diverse environment

·        Growing up during a certain time period

·        Education level of family

It can be terrifying when you worry about saying the wrong thing.

Be respectful of other’s thoughts and open to feedback.

What do we do if a donor makes a comment that makes you uncomfortable but you don’t feel empowered to say something?

When can we move past what makes us different?

For those who aren't white, it's much more in your face.

For those of us strongly in one part of the compass, we feel it would be helpful to move more into the other sections

Race is always on the minds of those experiencing any form of racism internally. Fear is constant, especially when we have kids. Separation from internalization leads to discrepancy in this answer. Parenting and protection can only get us so far in an unsafe world. Facing this problem as one community can be a solution. Learn from everyone's experience.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. 

 

Moral/Intellectual – This is a more comfortable place – have to be better about feeling uncomfortable and getting into the emotional and relational area.

 

Moral/Emotional – Instantly getting so emotional about it – thinking how can people even do this? How is this possible – I have to back away from that emotion and think more about the history and the larger structure.

 

Moving between the Emotional and Relational quadrants from interacting with people on an emotional level that doesn’t get anywhere versus really doing things that make a difference.

 

How much of our history and education has been white-washed, putting into context the actions of the last few years. Not knowing yet what we can do about that – what I as a white person can do, how does it inform my work, my family, my life.

->We have more Asian faculty than Black, even though Philly is 44.1% Black,  

->People hire people who look like them

->Hiring committees must be diverse and value diversity

->With faculty, availability of candidates *may* be a limiting factor.

Increase in prominence may prompt potential backlash from racist donors

 

Who will name the center – will it be black philanthropists? Does it have to be? Who is on that prospect list? When we raised money for other cultural centers, we targeted donors within those cultures. Do we even have enough diversity on our trustees to even be able to ask a trustee for this level of naming support? Philanthropists donate to things that elevate their status in the world they live in. The idea of a Center Black Culture being funded and named by a white philanthropist does not sit well.
