Classrooms today vs Goyal's classroom

In todays society, classrooms are very structured with many rules. The students are glued to their desk and must ask permission when they want/need to get up. If a student is caught out of their seat they are usually punished with a clip moving down or dojo points taken away. If classrooms were run the ways Goyal envisions students would get up on their own without asking when they needed to go the bathroom or their pencil needed to be sharpened. Students would be able to think more independently and freely. Teachers are expected to teach standards the same way for every student. On pg 94 Goyal talks about the first time his friends rebelled from memorizing the multiplication table. The student wanted to memorize it in his own way. Students should be able to learn freely and by different strategies. I feel this would create more respect from students to teachers and vice versus.

Ron Clark Academy is a good representation of what Goyal expects from a classroom. The students are having fun and the teacher is standing on the tables! This creates a positive and energetic learning environment for the students! I'm sure this school also doesn't scold the students for going to the restroom or getting out of their seats to grab a pencil.

This video shows how some schools are and what they should really be like. The beginning is how kids feel in school, its like a prison. Students have no say in what they can and can't do. They are getting in trouble for being kids. No matter how nice the students are teachers and other school workers are rude. The second half of the video shows how we can change this and become better teachers and mentors to our students. Being nice and showing respect for our students earns respect for us as well. Allowing students the ability to enjoy school increases their drive to learn tremendously.

Teacher roles

We chose this image because it shows a teachers job is to get to know their students and allow them to think independently. Model with examples is also important because students need to see what they are learning. Knowing the students prior knowledge is important as well so that the teacher is not reteaching information but only expanding on it. The last role is the most important in our opinion because students need time to talk and think about what they have learned. It allows them to think outside of the box and more in depth.

On page 103 Goyal mentions that students have no tests or grades before graduation the school, but that they have a rich portfolio that documents all of their projects. In today's classroom many teachers are still forced to give tests. Not only give tests but give the test until the student shows mastery which is at least 80 percent. Opening a school where no tests are given was a genius idea, I personally know a few people who have major test anxiety. The anxiety they get before or during a test prevents them from thinking clearly and performing to their best ability. It even caused one of my close friends to have to take summer classes before getting into college, but he graduated third in his high school class.
What I'm getting at here is that portfolios should be used more than they are, you can monitor all of a students success just by a portfolio. It allows students to see their progress grow, it lets them share their creativity, and it also helps them see their successes in all the work they put into something.
Tulley was a genius for opening the school he did and running it the way it was ran, it gave the students freedom and independence in learning and I think this is what Roy Clark Academy is aiming to be.
