Groups of people try to conquer land to have more power. You get power when you have more land since the more resources that you have you get even more power. The resources people get to have power are water, food, oil, minerals, food, and other riches. 
The mexican-american war 1846-1848 was focused on the amount of land each country had because of the reacources.

Groups of people conquer lands and get riches like minerals, water, gold, etc. taking this makes this people feel secure and having resources that all the world wants makes them powerful. This is thing that people want and need because from the land they can make money and take resources that will help them survive. However, this is a cause of conflict.
 From 1754 to 1763, the British and French fought  although part of the  Seven Years War, has come to be known as the French & Indian War. The French and Indian War was fought to decide if Britain or France would be the strong power in North America. France and its colonists and Indian allies fought against Britain, its colonists and Indian allies.  The war began with conflicts about land. They fought for resources that will help them survive and gain power.

A big chunk of the world has had a war sometime in history. In countries (most in the middle east) don't allow children to go to school because of their religion, race, and/or gender. Also many children around the world get bullied because of their race, religion, and gender.  Humans have always acted like this, we just don't like things that are different to us. But we have to get used to this because if we want to have world peace, we first have to achieve equality.

We want resources, and if we have that we get money and power. Having all of this resources make people feel secure because they know it won't run out. But if countries have a lot of resources to sustain their country they have more power because more countries want it. If other countries want it they get to trade. But trade is happening less and less because countries have borders so it's harder to trade. If you trade with another country you get more money. Countries with huge amount of resources are richer. There is something called the conflict recources, which is a natural recource such as diamonds, timber, gold, and other minerals that is traded or sold to help pay for weapons and keep a conflict going. But, that is terrible because if spend money on weapons for soldiers to fight, there is more conflict recources, then those recources are sold to get money to buy more weapons an soildiers to keep fighting one another. Which creates a huge conflict!

Nowadays trade of supplies happens less because we now have borders. Countries with huge amounts of resources are richer. For example, The U.S., Canada, Australia... But, Most countries with  a lot of resources are not doing very well, this is called the recourse curse. The dishonest governments are the real cause behind this. Many of our beloved gadgets and jewelry made from col-tan. 80% of it is held in Congo. This is a conflict resources as many people fight for it. Conflict resources bring many many yearly dollars for a country. Corruption for these resources cause a deadly cycle the might never be stopped.

people also may fight for security. some countries may be very insecure but some people it can be citizens or they can be people from other countries. the people that fight for land may want power for security power for money and power for resources, meaning that most of the people fight for their country may want different things but at the end everything is connected with money or resources.

finally some people fight about land because of beliefs. the people that fight for beliefs fight for religion,race and economic classes.

Volunteered teenage boys were brought in a room and were divided into group A and B. The boys then had divide money  in between the 2 groups. All of the boys left more money for their own group than the other team. This happens because the boys think that if they have more money they have more power and rights to keep their self-image. Therefore my group is better than your theory is correct.

The conflict is not usually about the ethnic differences themselves but over, political, economic, social, cultural, and for territorial matters. 
What causes ethnic conflict?
The fact that someone is better than another person like the believe of 'My group is better than yours'. For example, if groups A understands something but group B doesn't that usually creates a conflict of equality in between this two groups. And the conflict ins't about the two groups speaking different languages or looking different. It's how they're treated, the opportunities they have because of those differences.
