Hawthorne uses the term "The Black Man" to signify the Devil because it gives a human embodiment of Satan himself. "Yes, Mother," answered Pearl. "But if it be the Black Man, wilt thou not let me stay a moment, and look at him, with his book big under his arm?" Pearl states that she knows the whereabouts of "The Black Man" and how he carries his book under his arm, referring to those who sign his book sold their souls (Hawthorne, chapter 16). Another scenario is that Dimmesdale exclaims, "I have laughed, in bitterness and agony of heart, at the contrast between what I seem and what I am! And Satan laughs at it!" (Hawthorne, pg. 188). He then transfers his blame from the companies and said that Mr. Rockefeller committed perjury as well. All of this is written by and individual claiming they are Satan. This individual is later believed to be the author Mark Twain.
