The COVID-19 pandemic is an ongoing global pandemic of the coronavirus disease, and amidst the pandemic in Australia, the Australian media plays an important role as a mediator between government officials and health organisations, and the public. Representation of a phenomenon in media can impact and shape particular public beliefs and attitudes, which can contribute to social change. Racist reporting is still rife in Australian media, and since the coronavirus was first detected in China, Asian Australians, particularly of Chinese heritage, experienced an increase in abuse and racist attacks, as well as a negative portrayal in the media perpetuated by racial profiling and racist undertones.

Media distribution of key messages concerning the global pandemic plays a significant role in influencing how people react to public health countermeasures.

Since the coronavirus was first detected in China, Asian Australians, particularly of Chinese heritage, experienced an increase in abuse and racist attacks, as well as a negative portrayal in the media perpetuated by racial profiling and racist undertones.

There is a gap in the literature to conduct further research regarding how racism affects a specific single minority group, in particular the Chinese Australians, brought by the news, as studies are generally aimed at the whole minority group.

Additionally, the current Australian media landscape is lacking diversity. An increase in the level of cultural competency, racial literacy and cultural diversity within media organisations are needed to give young Australians with diverse backgrounds a platform in the media.

Limitation: This research analyses only articles published online by the referred Australian news media. Other state-wide newspapers and intermittent time periods are excluded from the research to reduce sample size. Therefore, this may lead to an inaccurate and incomplete representation of answering the research question.
