What ways can we welcome elders to our daycare? We can phone them and ask if there willing to come and talk to show children what they used to do back in the day. Tell the children they never had cell phones so they were always playing out. Make some tea and snack and show them Inuit culture like drum dance and throat singing.

Since elders don’t have emails or social media, or that most cant read. We can give them a phone call and ask them if they would like to come to the daycare and for a gathering or that they’re invited to the daycare for story telling.

once they come to the daycare greet them with tea, coffee, water and some light snacks.

When done we can give them a gift card as a thank you for tell stories to the children.

We could welcome them and include elders into the daycare by inviting them asking them if they could tell stories about our culture and traditions, and ask if they could show some of their culture tools, and ask for permission if the children could touch/feel their tools…

We can welcome elders to have tea and ask them to tell stories along with some string games to demonstrate to the children. We can also do a little drum dancing with everyone. Later after that we can have snacks.

We can ask their family members if they are interested in talking about their way of life(appropriate way) at daycare, teaching the children to do Inuit games, or even phone them about the details and having tea ready with finger food/snacks and an interpreter if needed.

Story telling, drum dancing, ajagaq games, string games, nugluktaq, napaattaq, and a lot of other traditional games we can invite elders for. We can advertise through social media for their children to pass along the message, through radio, flyers, even personal phone calls.

We can welcome elders to the daycare by calling them or asking in person, when they come offer tea or coffee. Ask them to tell stories about Inuit legends, stories on how they grew up, since we have a drum at the daycare ask them if they can show the children how to properly drum dance. Teach a few words and maybe show art work if they have any.

One way we can welcome and include elders into the daycare, is by giving them a phone call to ask if they can come in to talk about their own upbringing, how it was to live on the land, and ask them to talk to the children about the seasons, like how the moon has different shapes during the winter, spring, summer and fall. We can also provide tea and bannock.

An example of inviting an elder into the daycare was in spring of 2025, we invited elder Susan Toolooktook to show the children her clothing made out of caribou skins and explain to the children that they are very warm when they use caribou clothing out on the land.

By inviting elders to share stories, traditional knowledge, songs, games and Inuit ways of learning/surviving. This helps create a respectful and comfortable learning environment and to build connections to our culture and community.

Talk to an elder if they are able to come in and teach or talk to the children. When the elder walks in we greet them with a hello welcome to the daycare please enjoy your time here.
