Emma - Eritrea formally gained its independence from Ethiopia on May 24th 1993. Eritreans voted overwhelmingly in favour of independence in a UN-monitored referendum. (99.83% for independence.) Issues began when Emperor Haile Selassie unilaterally dissolved the Eritrean parliament and illegally annexed the country in 1962. After Eritrea became independent, things were initially friendly, disagreements about where the new border should be caused relations to deteriorate significantly, eventually leading to full scale war between 1998 and 2000.
