I recently learned about the word ageism, and it made me think a lot. Ageism means judging or treating people differently just because of their age. It can include the way we think, feel, and act toward people who are older or younger. I think this is a serious problem in society. In real life, I’ve heard people say things like “You’re too young to understand” or call older people names like “boomer.” These might seem like jokes, but they can hurt someone’s feelings or make them feel left out. After learning more about ageism, I started to wonder if I’ve also had unfair thoughts about people because of their age.I believe that age doesn’t decide how smart or valuable someone is. Young people can have great ideas, and older people have a lot of experience and wisdom. If we respect each other no matter how old we are, I think the world can be a better place. We should focus on each person’s thoughts and actions, not just their age. From now on, I will try not to judge people based on age. I also want to talk about this with my friends and family. Ageism is not only a problem for older people — it can also affect teenagers like me. That’s why I think everyone should care about it. I hope people can see others for who they really are, not just how old they are.

Ageism in the Age of Longevity: A Challenge for Modern Society

In recent years, South Korea has rapidly approached an ultra-aged society, with projections suggesting that by 2025, over 20% of the population will be 65 years or older. This demographic shift is often discussed in economic or healthcare terms, yet a deeper issue lies in the attitudes and structural biases embedded within society—namely, ageism. Originally coined by Robert Butler in 1969, ageism refers to discrimination or prejudice based on age, especially against older adults. It is a complex social phenomenon that not only marginalizes the elderly but also undermines the ethical foundations of a democratic and inclusive society.

Ageism manifests in both explicit and implicit ways. Explicit ageism can be seen in employment practices where older individuals are denied jobs or forced into early retirement, regardless of their ability or experience. Implicit ageism, on the other hand, operates through unconscious biases—such as assuming all older people are frail, forgetful, or resistant to change. These stereotypes not only shape public discourse but also affect individual self-perception among seniors, leading to lower self-esteem and reduced social participation.

Philosophically, ageism raises profound questions about the value of human life and dignity across the lifespan. A society that equates worth with productivity or youth implicitly violates the principle of equality. As highlighted in recent studies on ageism in Korea, this bias is exacerbated by the legacy of industrialization and hyper-competitive social structures, where the elderly are increasingly viewed as economic burdens rather than as bearers of wisdom and experience. The problem is not merely interpersonal prejudice but a systemic issue that intersects with healthcare access, labor rights, and even digital inclusion.

Indeed, in the digital age, older adults face a new kind of exclusion: technological ageism. Those unfamiliar with ICT tools may find themselves isolated, unable to access essential services or communicate effectively. This digital divide reinforces a cycle of dependency and invisibility, making it critical for public policy to promote digital education and lifelong learning opportunities for seniors.

To counteract ageism, both structural reform and cultural change are needed. First, legal and institutional protections must ensure that seniors are not excluded from the workforce or public life based solely on age. For example, anti-discrimination policies in employment should consider not only equal opportunity but also fair access to retraining and education. Second, society must reframe its cultural narratives around aging. Rather than viewing aging as a decline, we should recognize it as a transformation—an accumulation of experience and insight.

Moreover, ethical reflection demands that we question our own assumptions. As a student interested in political science and philosophy, I believe that justice requires us to dismantle hierarchies based on age just as we do those based on gender or race. Age, like any other human attribute, should not determine one’s rights or opportunities. If democracy means respecting the voice of every citizen, then ignoring or sidelining the elderly contradicts the very spirit of political equality.

In conclusion, the challenge of ageism in a 100-year life era is not just a problem of an aging society, but a test of our social values and philosophical integrity. As we live longer, the way we treat our elderly reflects not only on their quality of life but on the maturity of our collective conscience. Overcoming ageism will require both legislative action and a cultural shift—one that affirms the dignity, agency, and value of every person, at every age.

<참고자료>

In my opinion, ageism is not right. Whether young or old, age is simply a stage of life that every person experiences. If we think negatively of others solely because of their age, we must take a moment to reflect on what we were like when we were young, or consider what we will be like in the future. Everyone has a childhood, and everyone will eventually grow old. Holding a negative view of a stage of life that we have already lived through or will eventually experience shows a self-centered way of thinking. People of all ages are from different times. They are simply living according to the era they belong to. Each generation has its own strengths. Older people, having lived through many years, are rich in experience and knowledge. On the other hand, younger people are more adaptable, creative, and quick to learn. We need to understand and appreciate the strengths and values of each age group.

It can affect both the elderly and the young, often limiting their opportunities, voices, and self-worth. In my opinion, ageism is harmful and should not be accepted in any society.

Firstly, ageism in the workplace is a serious issue. Older people are often seen as less capable of adapting to new technologies or ideas, even though many are just as competent as younger workers.

Ageism: Discrimination Hidden as Kindness

A 2025 article from The Guardian introduces the concept of “elderspeak.” This refers to speaking to older adults using words like “sweetheart” or “dear,” and using a tone as if talking to a child. While this may seem friendly, the article explains that it is actually a form of benevolent ageism—a hidden form of discrimination against older people. Such behavior can harm their confidence and make them feel disrespected, even though the speaker may think they are being kind.

After reading this article, I believe that ageism is a serious problem, not just a small issue. Treating people differently just because they are older—or younger—is clearly a form of discrimination. Ageism doesn’t affect only older people; young people also experience it when others ignore their opinions or underestimate their abilities due to their age.

Therefore, I think people should be judged by their thoughts, experiences, and personality—not their age. Whether someone is young or old, they deserve to be treated as a respected individual, not defined by the number of years they have lived.

Ageism is a harmful bias that negatively affects both individuals and society, and therefore must be actively challenged and overcome. One major reason is employment discrimination, where many older workers face unfair treatment during hiring and promotions due to stereotypes that they are less adaptable or less productive. This limits their career opportunities and financial security, harming their quality of life. Additionally, ageism leads to inequality in healthcare, as medical professionals may dismiss symptoms or provide less aggressive treatments based solely on a patient’s age rather than their actual health condition, resulting in worse health outcomes. Furthermore, ageist attitudes contribute to social isolation and mental health problems, especially among the elderly, causing loneliness and depression. This not only impacts individuals but also increases societal costs related to mental health care. Therefore, combating ageism is essential for creating a fairer and healthier society

Do Media and Smart Devices Reinforce Ageism?

When I was in my first year of high school, I explored the relationship between media and stress among adolescents as part of a school research presentation. Through this project, I developed a growing interest in the psychological impact of media on teenagers. At the time, the research was centered on adolescents, but as I delved deeper, a question came to mind: “What kind of influence does media have on the elderly?” This question was closely tied to my everyday experiences within my family. My grandfather often struggled with using smartphones and digital technologies, and while I tried to help him, I sometimes found myself feeling frustrated. These personal experiences made me take a closer look at the digital divide between the elderly and media, and eventually led me to wonder whether smart devices might actually contribute to or reinforce age-based discrimination.

First, it is important to define what ageism means. Ageism refers to stereotypes, prejudices, and discriminatory behaviors based on a person's age. This term was first introduced in 1969 by American sociologist Robert Butler, who described it as encompassing negative perceptions of older adults, social exclusion, and denial of opportunities. Although the concept has since expanded to include discrimination against young adults and even children, the most prominent victims of ageism within social structures and systems remain the elderly. With the rapid transition to a digital and smart society, older generations are now facing new dimensions of exclusion.

Modern society has developed a diverse media environment thanks to advances in digital technology. Younger generations, especially teenagers and young adults, have naturally adapted to these technologies, gaining new opportunities for daily communication, information access, and cultural engagement through media. In contrast, older generations, who struggle to adapt to digital transformation, find themselves increasingly excluded from these evolving environments. According to the 2024 Digital Information Gap Survey published by Statistics Korea, the digital literacy level of those aged 60 and older is only about half that of people in their 20s and 30s. This disparity goes beyond mere device usage. It extends to differences in social participation, access to information, and opportunities for digital expression.

Such a gap significantly influences societal perceptions of the elderly. Media is a powerful tool in shaping how people think and act. In various media content—including dramas, commercials, news, YouTube videos, and social media posts—older adults are often portrayed as outdated, technologically incompetent, or dependent on others. These portrayals reinforce an image of older people as "inefficient" or "old-fashioned" in the minds of younger generations. Even if media does not explicitly promote discrimination, it continuously and unconsciously imprints fixed stereotypes through repeated exposure.

Moreover, the user interface and design of smart devices often do not take older users into consideration. Most interfaces are designed with younger users in mind, including elements like font size, color contrast, touch interaction, and voice guidance. As a result, elderly users repeatedly experience failure when attempting to use digital media, which eventually leads them to internalize statements like, “I just can’t do this,” or “This is only for young people.” This self-doubt leads to a loss of confidence, which in turn causes social withdrawal, isolation, and even depression. A study conducted with 1,500 older adults in the UK found that more than half reported feeling lonelier when using digital technologies.

In addition, the digitalization of public services presents yet another barrier for the elderly. Tasks such as submitting civil complaints, making hospital appointments, managing bank accounts, or checking public transportation schedules are now primarily handled through smartphone apps or websites. Many elderly individuals struggle with these systems and are therefore either excluded from accessing public services or forced to accept inefficient alternatives. For instance, in the field of sports, particularly professional baseball in Korea, most tickets are sold exclusively online. In 2024, professional baseball achieved a milestone of 10 million spectators, showing tremendous popularity. However, only 13% of the spectators were aged 40 or older, while the majority were between their teens and thirties. This sharp generational divide underscores the ironic reality in which digital technologies, while meant to be inclusive, can actually deepen social exclusion for older adults.

Social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram further reinforce ageism through their algorithms. These platforms primarily recommend content that appeals to younger users, putting the elderly at a disadvantage in terms of content diversity. Content created from the perspective of older people is often ridiculed or dismissed as “boring” or “outdated.” This not only limits the elderly’s ability to express themselves online but also solidifies a one-way communication structure dominated by younger generations.

However, the responsibility does not lie solely with the media or the technology itself. A larger problem is the institutional and cultural neglect of age diversity in the design and management of digital society. For example, digital literacy education is primarily focused on the youth, and smart policies often fail to incorporate the voices of older citizens. Therefore, the phenomenon of media reinforcing ageism is not merely the result of technology’s supposed neutrality, but rather a reflection of how society chooses to structure that technology.

With this understanding, I propose the following solutions. First, media content must expand narratives that respect age diversity. Portraying older adults as active and creative individuals can help weaken age-based stereotypes. A good example is the film The Intern, where a 70-year-old named Ben joins a company run by a young entrepreneur, Jules. His wisdom and experience are depicted in a way that encourages respect and empathy toward the elderly. Second, the design of digital interfaces must incorporate feedback from users of all age groups, following the principles of universal design. Older users often suffer from vision-related discomfort, so interfaces should be larger and simpler. Third, digital education should be lifelong, with customized programs specifically designed for the elderly. Lastly, younger generations should build relationships with older adults based not on one-sided teaching but on mutual understanding and shared learning.

In conclusion, media and smart devices are not inherently discriminatory. However, the way they are designed, used, and embedded within social structures can either reinforce or reduce ageism. As citizens of the digital age, we must work to create a more inclusive media environment. Empathy for the elderly, institutional support, and a cultural shift in how we view aging are all essential. The frustration I felt while helping my grandfather wasn’t just a matter of generational difference—it may have reflected a larger societal failure to bridge technological and cultural divides between generations. Now is the time to take action to close that gap.

Ageism, or discrimination based on age, is a harmful social bias that affects both older and younger people. It can lead to unfair treatment in workplaces, healthcare, and daily life, often limiting individuals' opportunities simply because of their age. Ageism reinforces stereotypes—like assuming older people are less capable or younger people are irresponsible—which prevents society from recognizing each person’s unique value. Combating ageism requires promoting respect across generations, changing negative perceptions, and creating policies that support equal treatment for all ages.

Ageism isn’t harmless. It’s a social problem that needs to be challenged, not ignored.

If you meant “Is ageism bad or not a big deal?”—then yes, it's bad.
If you meant something else by “bad or nothing,” feel free to clarify!

Ageism is not nothing—it is a serious and harmful form of discrimination. It negatively affects people of all ages, especially the elderly and the young, by limiting their opportunities and devaluing their contributions to society. Older adults may be seen as less capable or outdated, while younger people may be dismissed as inexperienced or immature. These stereotypes can lead to unfair treatment in workplaces, healthcare, and social settings. Ageism not only harms individuals but also weakens society by ignoring the value of diversity across generations. Therefore, ageism should not be taken lightly—it is a real problem that needs to be addressed through awareness, respect, and inclusive policies.

Ageism is undeniably bad.

It is a form of discrimination based on age, most commonly experienced by older adults, but it can also affect younger people in certain contexts. Ageism can manifest in the workplace, in healthcare, in media representation, and even in social interactions. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes, such as the belief that older individuals are less competent, less innovative, or resistant to change. These assumptions not only diminish the dignity and worth of older adults, but they also exclude them from opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society.

In the workplace, ageism can lead to unfair hiring practices, limited professional development, and forced early retirements. In healthcare, it can result in older patients receiving inadequate treatment simply because of assumptions about aging. Ageism in media often portrays older people as irrelevant or burdensome, further reinforcing negative perceptions.

Some might argue that ageism is “nothing” — that it’s a natural social dynamic or a minor issue compared to other forms of discrimination. However, dismissing it ignores the very real impact it has on millions of people. Ageism affects mental health, self-esteem, financial stability, and even life expectancy. It contributes to isolation and depression, particularly among the elderly.

Tackling ageism requires cultural change, intergenerational empathy, and policy reform. We must promote awareness that aging is not a decline, but a continuation of life with experience, wisdom, and value. Recognizing and combating ageism is not just about protecting the elderly — it’s about building a society that values all people, at every age.
