Since a robot saved him from a vehicle accident in 2035 while letting a little girl drown, Detective Del Spooner of the Chicago Police Department hates and distrusts robots. In a note he left behind, Dr. Alfred Lanning, co-founder of U.S. Robotics (USR), asks Detective Dr. Spooner to take up the case when he dies after falling from his office window. Although Spooner is unsure, the police report the death as a suicide. His business partner, CEO Lawrence Robertson, permits Lanning to look into the true circumstances behind the death of Dr. Alfred Lanning, co-founder of U.S. Robotics.

Detective Del Spooner of the Chicago Police Department despises robots. He had to have some sections of his body replaced with robotic components after suffering severe injuries in a terrible vehicle accident. He has a condition known as "survival's guilt." When someone feels guilty because they survived a potentially fatal event when others did not, this is known as survival guilt. Instead of blaming the little girl in the other automobile for her death, Spooner attributes his rescue to the icy, rational robots. Spooner is tasked with looking into the apparent suicide of his buddy Alfred Lanning (Cromwell), a roboticist who made his new arm and started U.S. Robotics (USR).

She oversaw the creation of the new NS5 models and collaborated closely with Dr. Lanning to give the robots a more human appearance. Her inability to relate to others and preference for the companionship of robots lead to conflict between her and Spooner. To find out whether robots have emotions, Calvin studied Sonny. She refers to robots as a "cleaner better breed" since they must adhere to a rigid code of ethics, which makes her prefer them to people.

In the 22nd century, rising sea levels from global warming have wiped out 99% of existing cities, reducing the world's population. In Madison, New Jersey, David, a prototype Mecha child capable of experiencing love, is given to Henry Swinton and his wife Monica Swinton, whose son Martin Swinton is in suspended animation after contracting a rare disease. Initially uncomfortable with David, Monica eventually warms up to him and activates his imprinting protocol. Wanting her to love him in return, he becomes friends with Martin's old robotic teddy bear named Teddy. After Martin is unexpectedly cured of his disease and brought home, he jealously goads David into cutting off a piece of Monica's hair. David enters his adoptive parent's room that night, but Monica turns over and is poked in the eye by the scissors. While Henry fixes up her wounds, Teddy picks up the pieces of hair from the floor and places them in his pocket. During a pool party, one of Martin's friends pokes David with a knife, triggering his self-protection programming. He gets a hold of Martin's arm, which then causes both David and Martin to fall into the pool. While Martin is being rescued, David is being accused of being a danger to humans.
