Oceans by Hillsong United

Oceans is a temporary christian/gospel song by the world renowned music group, Hillsong United. The central message of this song is one of hope and faith and the belief that leaning on God and trusting in Him will bring you peace. Could this song be culturally offensive? Yes. Not everyone is a Christian and believes in God. Although it conveys a message that everyone can relate to in the matter of sometimes everyone just needs to put their faith and trust in something, it is centered around trusting in God's will for ones life and not everyone believes that. For a believer in Christianity, this song brings good feelings of hope and trust. The lyrics say "Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders, let me walk upon the waters wherever you may call me." To me, this means putting your complete trust in God in hopes that He will restore your faith.

"Humble and Kind" is a country song by the famous country star, TIm McGraw. The central message of this song is pretty self-explanatory based on the title. It says that no matter what you experience and go through in life, always stay humble and kind. It has a very positive message about having manners, following rules, and always being appreciative of what you have and what you've been given. I don't think "Humble and Kind" would be culturally offensive. It is a clean song about having morals and being kind. I think it gives off a message that anyone can relate and listen to.

Where is the Love by The Black Eyed Peas

"Where is the Love" is a hip/hop rap song by the group, The Black Eyed Peas. The central message of this song is telling people that they need to wake up and realize what's going on in the world. It talks about discrimination and race, as well as world issues such terrorism, and problems in the media. The message conveys that love is the only thing that can change the hate that goes on in the world today. "Where is the Love" doesn't perpetrate stereotypes, however it talks about the gangs and cults that cause issues in America such as the bloods, crips, and the KKK. Aside from my beliefs about these groups, they could be considered culturally offensive, because some people may be a part of these gangs/groups or view them as an important part of our nation's history. The song gives hope that one day our nation may together if we start spreading more love than hate.

Freedom Writers is a film based off the book "The Freedom Writers' Diary" by Erin Gruwell. The film is about a new teacher who faces the challenge of teaching a class full of at-risk students. The central message of the movie is that every child should have the right to an equal education. It also conveys the message that all students learn differently, however they should all have the opportunity to an education. This movie conveys a message of hope and inspirations because of the students and the central character, Mrs. Gruwell. Mrs. Gruwell gives each of these troubled students hope and instills a passion to learn in each of them. The film is very culturally diverse. It represents students of all backgrounds and walks of life, such as gang members, families of drug dealers, criminals, and poverty ridden young adults, as well as students from middle-class families, like Mrs. Gruwell.
