I am Michelle Genodiala Lucero, 20 years old. I am still learning and growing every day. I have laughed, and I have been hurt, but I keep going. I am curious about the world and want to understand more. Even when life is hard, I try to stay hopeful and see the good things around me. I believe that every small moment matters and has a story to tell. I like to dream about the future, but I also know I need to work hard and stay strong in the present. I have faced difficult times, and those times have helped me become stronger inside. I try to be brave and keep a positive heart no matter what happens. I know I am not perfect, but I am doing my best to be the person I want to be. I am open to change and ready to face new challenges with hope and courage.

I grew up in Mandaue, where I spent my early years making memories. But in 2012, we moved to Tuburan after my grandfather—my father’s father—passed away. One of his last wishes was for us to live here. So we followed his words and started a new life in Tuburan. It was a big change, but this place has become a part of who I am and the journey I’ve taken.

I have a high school diploma, and I was consistent with honors during s-high school. After graduating, I started college as an Industrial Engineering student in my first year. But later on, I decided to shift to AB English because I realized it was a better fit for me. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I followed what felt right. Changing courses helped me discover more about myself and what I truly want in life. Education has taught me not just lessons from books, but also how to make brave choices for my future.

The biggest and most painful challenge I have ever faced in my life was losing my Ate and my Papa. They both died in the same motorcycle accident. It was a very sad and shocking day. One moment, everything felt normal, and the next moment, my whole world changed. I could not believe it was real. I kept hoping I was dreaming and that I would wake up and see them again. But they were really gone, and it broke my heart.

June 12, 2023 — that day is forever marked in my heart and mind. It was the day everything changed. My heart and brain still carry the weight of that moment. That day is my deepest sorrow, a wound that time has not fully healed. I remember every second, every detail, and how it felt like the world stopped.

It was very hard to understand why this happened. I had so many questions in my head, like “Why them?” and “Why did this happen to my family?” But no one could give me answers that made the pain go away. I felt lost, like a big part of me was taken. My days felt empty, and my heart was heavy with sadness. I missed their voices, their smiles, and the way they made me feel safe and loved.

Waking up every day was hard. I didn’t want to get out of bed, and I didn’t want to do anything. Sometimes I would cry quietly, and other times I couldn’t stop the tears. I felt so alone, even when I was with other people. It was like I was living in a world that didn’t feel right anymore. That pain stayed with me for a long time, and even now, I still feel it sometimes. But slowly, started to find ways to keep going.

I sometimes talk to myself in my head like I’m in a movie. I remember old song lyrics easily, but forget why I entered a room. I’ve danced alone in my room just to lift my mood. One personal thing many people don’t know is that I have PCOS. It’s not always easy, but it taught me to take care of my health and be more understanding of others. Also, I once joined a dance troupe! Most people are surprised when they hear that, because I’m super girly and very hinhin, you wouldn’t think I’d be dancing in front of a crowd, but I did, and I enjoyed it!

She stood strong for me through the hardest times, like when I lost my father and my ate. Their loss was very painful, but my mama’s love and strength helped me keep going.
