Summative Grade: You must complete 3 posts with all of the requirements and demonstrating that you have read, understood, and analyzed for both the content and the use of graphic novel techniques. Directions: Using writing, pictures, and/or video, analyze how the graphic novel elements in Persepolis convey the author's overall message about one of the essential questions topics in the text-- (1) Childhood: What affects us growing up into adulthood (2) cultural identity: How do individuals balance the demands and requirements of society with their own beliefs (3) Individual within a Revolution: How does a person survive in and make sense of a conflicted world? (4) Beliefs: How do we form our beliefs and what influences them?

Essential Question: 4: Beliefs
This technique demonstrates the essential question about beliefs as she is questioning her belief in God because Anoosh has been executed. She wonders where God was in all of this turmoil; thus, she is shouting at him to get out of her life. She is conflicted about her beliefs and the death is influencing her conflict with God.
Graphic Novel Elements: In this picture, the Speech Bubble shape is being used to show the extent of Marjane's anger as she is shouting at God. Her dialogue has an angry tone, and having the speech bubble be jagged emphasizes her shouting tone. Her trust has turned to anger, and this is conveyed in the jagged, shouting shape of the Speech Bubble.

This panel really uses the idea of graphic weight to the max, you cannot go on reading the book without looking at this panel, and for me it is the ghosts and flames that really grab my attention and almost make me look and stare at this drawing. And because of that the author is able to get your attention and make you feel the emotions she wants you to feel as every reader will look at this picture so this is not an emotion some people may get if they are paying attention, this is something that all people will feel no matter how good of a reader they are or how much attention they are paying.
Essential question 1: I think that this picture is a great representation of the idea question of what makes a person grow up, and this picture is what makes Marji grow up pretty fast and move into adulthood. To hear from up your parents that the local cinema was burned down with 400 people inside it and the police actually impeded help and everyone died inside is truly scary and will give you a new look on life. So I think that this picture is a perfect embodiment of what it means to affect your growing up and that is to hear of the horrific things going on around you and to not only be scared yourself but to also have your parents, who are never scared, be scared as well.

This panel uses the faces as a way to convey what the people are feeling. The people hitting their chests all at the same time really grabs my attention. Their faces in the panel show how much they are not wanting to to this "chant" to remember the dead and how hard it was for them to see the people killed in a war that she believes shouldn't have even happened. Their faces have no emotion on them and it shows how much they hate the Shah and their government.
Essential Question: This technique demonstrates the essential question about her beliefs as she is sad because all of the martyrs that died are passing her and how it was unecessary that they had to die for their own freedom.

This picture really uses the idea of shadow and color to bring out emotions in the reader, the way that they portray Marji’s face is very important for bringing out the emotion as it shows both sides of the spectrum. And through this coloring we can really see how the character feels, it would be much different if the author had just said that Marji felt sad. And that is why this picture is a great representation of the idea that shading and color add a lot of emotion.
Essential question 2: this is a great example of how a person is trying to demand of their personal and sociatal demands. Here Marji is torn between her great friend who is leaving for the United States to escape the revolution and conlfict and her home where she has grown up and made so many great friends and had such a fun time. And so this picture paints the perfect image of sombody who is really torn between two things and the worst part of the tear is that she can do nothing about it but just has to let it happen and play out.

An authors job is to write a book, seems simple but there’s much more to it than that, the author also has to be able to get emotions out of the reader so they can really experience the writing like the author intended it to be. And here the reader can experience this by the way that the caption is put down in the book. With all of the disorganization already with the jumble of photos the readers eyes are wandering all over the page trying to decipher the photos and a nice box with writing in it would stick out like a sore thumb so instead to keep the theme and give the pictures the spotlight the author puts the caption like a normal sentence at the top of the pictures instead of in a box all by itself.
Essential question 3: I think that this question answers essential question 3 the best as you can see that the characters are tying to make sense of what is going on around them by taking pictures and documenting the important moments so that not only will the people who were involved would remember but those who weren’t there would be able to experience it as well. And this picture just really shows how people survive I the revolution, and specifically Marji’s familiy, her father takes photos for proof and also in rememberance of exactly what happened so that Marji will never forget what happens, or the world, and that is how at least Marji’s father copes with the revolution

This panel shows a lot of graphic weight. The caption talks about how so many people have fled the city because of the attacks but her family remained. You can see that shes not only alone in her city, but she feels alone as well. She’s walking down an empty street and even the trees seem bigger than her and the road seems large because she’s walking by herself. Essential question-Individual within a revolution: You can see that Marjane’s family values their beliefs by how stubborn they are about staying in their city, even during the attacks and the revolution. You can see that Marjane feels alone and she’s trying to cope with all of this in any way she can.

Essential question 2-Cultural identity: In this panel you can see that there’s two halves showing two completely different sides of Marjane. During the revolution we can see how truly difficult it must be to know exactly who you are. Marjane’s struggles with this because she’s personally very religious but her family is also very modern and not as into traditional beliefs.

In the background we see just the outlines of people but we can see Marjane and she’s very upset seeing how sad her mother is and her father as well. We also can see the people in the midground’s faces and that some people are concerned or couldn’t care less. We see that a shadow has fallen over her fathers face as a way of showing how upset he is. While her mothers face looks as though she’s weeping while her husband carries her. Essential question 1- childhood: This event is sure to affect Marjane and make her much more mature in the future. I wasn’t even allowed to go on a plane when I was 14 but Marjane had to mature quick and be able to go to a different country alone, even during a revolution!

This picture uses the idea of panel to show how much the war has affected people's lives. The way that they portray the battlefield beneath Marji, the way she is just watching it all happening while her life depends on the end result of the war. The panel is takes up a whole page to show the unnecessary qualities of the war and to show how much everybody's lives can be changed.
Essential Question 1: Marji's childhood depends on the outcome of the war and it shows how hard it can be growing up in those terrifying conditions. War can have a huge input of what we are like in the future and what it can take and make from us. (pg. 116)

This panel really uses the idea of shading to portray the devastation caused by the Iraqi bombers. The way the white outlines of the explosions are placed on the panel show how much it has affected the city and the consistancy they are falling at. The color in this picture shows us how much the bombs weighed as well by the way they put motion lines around the bomb showing how it swayed back and forth because of the wind.
Essential Question 1: Marji's way of life has been affected by the bombings in a significant way. Each time a bomb goes off near them the more and more she hates the government and her society that she lives in. She could turn into a psycho with the constant bombing and could always be on edge as a result of it. War can change peoples lives in many ways, most of them are bad. (pg.103)
