Marco Polo and Denis and Francis experienced many similarities when they traveled to Hong Kong and Sumatra. One thing that all of the men saw was that in Hong Kong and Sumatra, the local people had a lot of skills. A main skill was to be a tattoo artist. The people in Hong Kong and Sumatra had tattoo's everywhere on their bodies. The citizens considered the tattoo's to be clothing. To provide "clothing" for everyone, there had to be a lot of people with skill. The American men, and Marco Polo came across these accusations, which made them believe that Hong Kong and Sumatra were highly valued areas in China.

Although there were similarities between the two journeys, there were also differences. When Marco Polo traveled through Hong Kong and Sumatra, he called the people savages and cannibals. Polo saw the people there as evil and vicious. The people would eat other human beings. When Denis and Francis traveled there, there was no such thing as cannibalism. The people were very friendly, and helpful wherever they were.

When Denis and Francis traveled to Iran, they faced some challenges that Marco Polo did not. The government in Iran wouldn't let Denis and Francis in even though they had visas to get in. The two men had to wait for weeks until the government allowed them to enter the country. When Marco Polo traveled to Iran, he had no problem entering the country. He traveled in Iran just like he traveled in every other country. Being able to enter and leave Iran so easily displays difference in the time periods. Now, Iran and the United States do not get along very well, which makes it hard to enter that country. But in the 13th century, there was no problem between the U.S. and Iran, so it was easy to enter and leave there.

While in Iran, Marco Polo and the two American stayed at rest stops to sleep. In both of the places, there were ventilators. In Iran, the climate was very warm in the 13th century, and is still very warm. Due to the warmth, ventilators were necessary. The ventilators caught wind to help cool down buildings. These ventilators helped keep Marco Polo, Denis, and Francis cool during their stay in Iran, and overall improved their trip to this country.

During the trip in Kashmir and the Taklamakan Desert, Denis and Francis experienced a Chinese shake down. While they were on a bus traveling, some Chinese men invaded the bus and asked where they were at. The men had guns and were very intimidating. Once the Chinese men saw a picture of them with the president, they left. But the challenge slowed down their travel. Marco Polo, however, didn't go through an experience like this. He had smooth travels and no challenges.

In Kashmir and the Taklamakan Desert, all of the men saw that the doors on houses had the names of every person that lived in the house. The Uyguers had the names on the doors to keep track of the amount of people in their city. In saying this, if someone in their house died, their name would be crossed out, and if someone in their house was born, their name would be added to the door. This tradition in their culture also added some history in their culture. The people were able to see everyone who has lived in their house before them, and know the names of those people hundreds of years after they passed. This allowed the Uyguers to learn more about the past if their culture through others.

While in Afghanistan, Marco Polo saw many things that Denis and Francis also saw years and years later. In the cities, there were many lamb houses. These were like little restaurants that only served lamb. Most places served lamb cabobs as a main meal. Lamb was the main food in their culture, and was highly valued. Denis, Francis, and Marco Polo were forced to eat lamb as their meal because that is all that was there.

Getting into Afghanistan was a difficult task for Francis and Denis, but not Marco Polo. The two Americans had to wait about 3 weeks to cross the Friendship Bridge into Afghanistan. The Afghan government would not allow them to enter, so, Denis and Francis forged their visas, and also paid a 100 dollar bribe to get across. Marco Polo did not have to go through any of this. He got in using a plan that he developed weeks before entering.

In India, Marco Polo described how they had idols of Indian gods everywhere. Denis and Francis, saw these idols right away. Marco Polo said that these idols had heads of 4 faces, and some had 3 heads. Some gods have 10 hands, others have a thousand hands. Sure enough, Denis and Francis saw these exact idols of gods. They were astonished by the art and how well Marco Polo's description matched up with what they saw.

Although there were similarities, Denis and Francis had to go through a tough challenge that Marco Polo didn't have to go through, This almost made them go all the way back to the United States. Francis finally had the chance to call his family. When he called, he found out that his dad had passed away. This was a major set back for the two Americans. They thought that they were going to half to go home and stop their journey. But they pushed trough it, and stayed. Marco Polo did not half to go through a tragic event like that while he was in India. He did not have a life changing experience like Francis did.

During the journey, Denis and Francis and Marco Polo experienced many differences. When Marco Polo traveled in the Walkhan Corridor, he said that there was no shelter what so ever, and that a person had to fend for themselves out there. He described how he had to sleep on the cold snow every night, and how he used the camels and horses to keep him warm. When Denis and Francis traveled through the Walkhan Corridor, they said that they slept on dirt floors, but they did have a little hut for shelter. Even though it was cold with or without shelter, the hut made it a little warmer and easier to sleep.

Also in the Walkhan Corridor, Marco Polo described how the people made road signs out of horns from an animal to point people in the right direction through the snow. When Francis and Denis traveled through that area, they also saw the horn road signs just like Marco Polo did. Both periods of time had the same signs in the same places.

I would love to travel to Venice, Italy if I had the chance to. One of the reasons that I would like to go there is because of the beauty there. Instead of roads and loud cars, they have water and gondolas. Also, the architecture in Venice is beautiful. There is not many modern houses, Venice has more older architecture which blows my mind.

In the film, In the Footsteps of Marco Polo, Denis and Francis learned many lessons. One of the main lessons learned was that not everything is going to go as planed, but you should always push through the challenges and never give up. This lesson was showed in multiple places throughout the film. For example, when Francis found out that his father died, they had to push through the pain and follow through with their journey. Also, in multiple places, such as Iran, Francis and Denis had to fight to enter certain countries. But, they fought and fought until they were allowed in. Denis and Francis never gave up even if things didn't go as planned.
