Elaborate Rehearsal

Elaborate Rehearsal allows for information found within STM to be transferred over to long-term memory (LTM). This is done by elaborating on the details of a particular memory, highlighting them in order to recall the information later on. For example, one of the local neighbors is named Bill Rice. By focusing on the last Rice and pairing it with a mental image you can relocate the information to LTM for later usage. Elaborate Rehearsal demonstrates the connection between memory and learning by fixating on the details of a memory in order to retain information.

Maintenance Rehearsal

The use of maintenance rehearsal prolongs the amount of time for retaining information within short-term memory (STM). One technique of maintenance rehearsal includes repetition. Repetition allows STM to hold on to a particular piece(s) of information for a given purpose. After the purpose is completed, the information will be discarded. For example, a student may be studying minutes before a test by repeatedly writing down every key point. Once they have completed the test, most of the information that was gathered will now be discarded. maintenance rehearsal shows a relation between memory and learning because a person can learn given information by repeating a certain memory.
