An elegy is a statement made about the deceased that usually cast them in a positive light and emphasizes the tragedy in their dead. The tone of “The Great Gatsby” Is exceptionally elegiac toward the titular character, especially during the seen of his death . The elegiac tone is shown when we first meet Gatsby during his house party, where he is depicted as kind and very polite, putting emphases on his best qualities. When Gatsby’s murder is reached the author wrote “It was after we started with Gatsby towards the house that the gardener saw Wilson’s body a little off in the grass, and the holocaust was complete,” greatly highlighting and dramatizing the brutality and tragedy of Gatsby's death. Focusing on the subjects best moments and then giving his dead such an impact is very typical of an elegy. This elegiac style helps make Gatsby's death much more meaningful to the reader.
