Elie knew his father was going to die. But he tried to help him as much as he could to keep him alive. He also wished for his father had died but he immediately felt ashamed. He searches for his father for a while and said "Don't let me find him". He keeps trying and trying to keep his father alive for days on but it wont last because he has dysentery. The men in their barrack hit his dad when Elie is out, Elie threatened them but they just laughed. The block leader tells Elie to stop caring for his father because it every man for himself. He stays awake with his father and listens to him moan Elie but he goes to bed. When Elie wakes up in the morning his father is gone hoping they did not take him to the crematorium. But Elie will not cry but he knew if he searched his mind he would be "Free at last!". Elie didn't have to care for his father anymore he could do his own thing survive on his own, he lost someone but gained himself back. When Elie looked at himself in the mirror he saw a dead corpse, he had barley survived lost everyone, saw things that he can never erase and now he has to live with that all his life. He will not recognize anymore.

At the beginning of his fathers sickness, Elle keeps pushing him to survive, making him not lie in the snow to tie. But as elle gets weaker, he begins to think of his father as a burden, which pains him, but he can not help it. He is thatnkful that he's alive because of the extra ration he gets. When his father dies, he cannot weep, and considers himself free, these thoughts are killing him from the inside and he hates them. An Ellie that only cares about himself is born in the place of the old caring Elle.

When Elle looks in the mirror, he only sees skin and bones that have been changed so much from his experience at camp. He thinks he is a monster because of his thoughts about his father, and does not recognize himself.

Before he died, Elie constantly was saying, about how his father was the only reason he had to keep fighting, and not die. While his father is dying, Elie does everything in his power, to make him happy and keep him alive, even though he knows that it is time for his father to go. Also, whilst his father is in deaths row, he wanted so badly for him to get help, that he was considering strangling a man. After his father died, Elie did not cry, but he did feel terrible about not crying. But, he does say, on page 112, that he is "Free at last!" Which makes it sound, like caring for his father, had put a great deal of stress on him, and he just wanted it to be lifted away.
Parts of Elie have died, wether by choice or not. His conscience halfway died with his father, since he thought about how he missed his father, but also of how he is finally free, and how he does not have to take care of his father anymore. Another part of him that has died, his need to stay alive, has vanished. On page 113, it says, "I shall not describe my life during that period. It no longer mattered." This shows that whilst his need to stay alive died out, not caring about life, took its spot.
Elie doesn't recognize himself in the mirror, calling the image, his, and he, not my and mine. A reason why Elie doesn't recognize himself is because, of all hardships he has had to face. Time takes a toll on the body, and since the last time Elie say himself in the mirror, was before the ghetto, he thought that maybe he would look the same, and was unable to see passed the new face. Another reason why, is because of the look in his eyes, that most likely showed hardship, and since before this, Elie has never really been introduce to anything semi terrible, he didn't know what hardship looked like, in the eyes. Also, the eyes must have looked really sunken in, and dead, and Elie was a happy kid, before all of the terrible things happened.

1) The death of Ellie's father had affected Ellie, because while his father was alive, Elie had something to fight for. He had someone to care about. His father relied on Ellie. When his father died, Ellie felt alone. No one to care for. No one to care for him, and that is why he started to function like a robot. Only thinking of one thing. An extra ration of soup. On page 112, Ellie suggests that he's, "Free at last!" Showing that caring for his father had put a burden on his shoulders, and that with that burden now being gone, he has nothing to worry about, nothing to care about. On page 113, Ellie writes, "I shall not describe my life during that period. It no longer mattered. Since my fathers death, nothing mattered anymore." Meaning that he no longer cared about anything. Nothing matters to him anymore, and that is the part of him that was broken. Broken almost beyond repair.
2) Elie doesn't recognize himself in the mirror, because the concentration camps and the Germans have done more than just alter people's physical appearances, they have changed everybody mentally. Ellie no longer recognizes himself because the Germans have beat him, starved him, exhausted him, and threatened to kill him so many times, that it has dehumanized him. (Is that a word? It is now). Ellie no longer sees a sixteen year old boy, he sees a person who has

1.) When Elie's father had first gotten sick he tried to encourage his father that he would get better and to continue on. It pushed Elie to become stronger for not only himself but his father too. He did everything in his power to keep his father happy and okay until his passing. Elie gave his father his ration of food when his father had become very week to continue on. They had went to the doctor, but they wouldn't do anything because they thought he would die eventually so why waste that ration of food. Elie wanted to help his father so bad that he considered strangling a man. Once Elie's father died he didn't cry. When Eli's father was with him it gave Elie a reason to stay strong because he had someone at his side that he loved. When his father died Elie felt alone and there was nothing anymore. On page 112 it says "Free at last!" This shows that his father had put extra weight and stress on his shoulders, but now that his father had passed there was nothing for him. 2.) Elie didn't recognize himself in the mirror physically and mentally. The Nazi's took everything away from them: their homes, their family, friends, belongings, clothes, starved them, beat them, threatened to kill them, and they shaved off their hair. The Jewish people weren't just physically changed. After all of the deaths, experiences and horror they faced in the camps it changes the way that they think. Elie doesn't recognize himself anymore because he doesn't think the same way as he used to. Before the concentration camps Elie had the life of a kid. He had a family that loved him dearly and he as free to believe in the religion that he wanted. After the concentration camp it picked at him piece by piece till he felt like there was no hope, there was nothing left in the world for him because he had lost so much.

1) Elie was affected by his fathers death by losing his ability to care for anything. After watching his father die and hearing his last words which were Elie's name, he had no care in the world for anything else. All the guilt built up inside him and he just lost any feelings he had of love and affection. For example on page 113, he says "Since my fathers death, nothing mattered to me anymore. Instead of showing love, he became dead inside and had basically no feelings
2) Elie didn't recognize himself in the mirror for many reasons. One reason was because physically he had changed from ththe camps. Secondly, the last time he saw himself in a mirror was a long time ago, so he hasn't seen himself in forever and has no clue what he actually looks like. Thirdly, he was exposed to everything horrible in those camps. Nothing good came out of the experience. He lost literally everything he loved. He basically was a body walking without a heart and soul. He has no feelings anymore because of everything horrible that has happened to him.

1)Ellie was affected by his fatheres death greatly. His father showed him that love still existed and kept him going. Elise father wasn't the strongest but that made Elie strong. Once his father died he simply have no reason to love on. Now he was all alone with nothing to look forward to in life.
2) Elie didn't recognize himself physically because the camp purposefully stripped him of his identity. They starved him, his clothes were gone, his hair was gone, he was dirt and simply no longer had the glow of happiness. But also mentally he changed which created a new way he viewed himself. He no longer wanted to live. He no longer was happy. He has seen more then anyone could've imagine. He's seen people live and die, strong become weak, and kind people become killers. And be questions who he has become. All he knows is that he isn't the same.

1)Elie was affected immensely by the sickness of his father. He saw him giving up, and Elie pleaded with him constantly not to. He knew that he had to stay alive and motivate his father, that's the only way he might be able to keep him around. However once his dad died, he didn't care about anything anymore. He even started thinking about how much easier it would be for himself now that he didn't have to carry around another burden with him, but immediately got mad at himself for thinking that. Basically, Elie kind of almost just gave up himself after his father died. Nothing affected him because he simply didn't care enough to care.

2) Once Elie looked in the mirror for the first time after being in the camps, he didn't recognize himself for many reasons. First and most obviously, he did not recognize himself physically. His body hadn't basically morphed into something else. He was skinny and bald, but the part that was most heartbreaking to Elie wasn't the physical appearance, it was what happened on the inside. His heart wasn't the same, his eyes weren't not the same, and his smile was most certainly not even close to how it was before. He was trapped inside of his own living death, and he doesn't even know who he truly is anymore.
