The theme/message of the poem is loyalty and perseverance. The passage says "Each with its own woman and twining welcome to be navigated, and one to call home."(Merwin). This reflects loyalty because Odysseus realizes that while there are many options, there is only one place where and one person with whom he truly belongs. Perseverance is reflected in

In the poem, there are many examples of imagery. An example would be "Behind him on the receding shore" and "There were the islands/Each with its woman and twining welcome to be navigated" These examples of imagery show Odysseus' struggles and his loyalty to people.

Some of the main differences between the poem and the book were that the poem dove deeper into how Odysseus was sucked into the events that cause him to be left "stranded" on an island. They both describe his feelings thought, they both show how much pain was just piled onto each other and how it broke down even the strongest of men.
