Summary of EPIC Rover

The EPIC Rover app was introduced to my unit at work last year. My unit is older and therefore there are no computers in the patient's rooms. Ideally, EPIC Rover is a mobile app that can be downloaded to hospital supplied handheld devices. The devices need to have a scanning feature and a way to type in information. At my hospital, we use the Zebra handheld devices. On the Rover app you can scan medications, check blood products, make and receive phone calls, view vitals and lab results, print labels for specimens, and even take pictures of wounds and upload them straight to the EPIC flowsheet. It's very convenient and helps prevent medication eras and allows you the ability document things in real time.

Pros of using the EPIC rover is that I can feel confident about the safety of the patient when scanning and administering medications and blood products. It's also great because you can review labs, vitals, and patient information on the go. A lot of times you can get stopped in the middle of the hall and get asked things by your charge nurse, management, or doctors.

Cons of using the Rover app is mostly the device that it's programmed on. It can be kind of heavy to carry around. Also, during the beginning of COVID pandemic, hospitals was scarce on disinfecting wipes, so it was hard to keep the Rovers clean from room to room which is why most of us stopped using the app. Also, the screens can be a challenge when trying to input data.

My opinion of the EPIC Rover app is that it is a great innovation for nurses. As nurses, we are always on the go and do not always have access to a computer. It's great to be able to look up medications, labs and vitals at bedside if you need to review something for a doctor who is at bedside or before administering a medication.

To implement the EPIC Rover app at my hospital, the people I would select to be on the team is:
1. Faith because her top strength is futuristic. She will be open to change and understands that technology is the future.
2. Carlee because to help with innovations, you need consistent people to be attendance for meetings and to help with implementation.
3. Andrew because in order to implement an innovation you need someone who understands how to activate it on the units.
4. Pablo because this can be a very stressful thing to do and positivity is always needed.
5. Fernando because it's easy to get off track. You need someone who can keep the team focused on the tasks ahead.
