LU 1 - Art & Science of Teaching (e-portfolio 1)

Art and Science of Teaching – what is your position about the nature of teaching – is it an Art, or Science, or both? Explain your thoughts.
__________________________________________________________________________________
To me teaching is part art and part science. the science part of the teaching is understanding the students behaviors that will effect the effectiveness of the teaching and how educators tackle and understand the behaviors to enable learning process to take place. This includes the teaching techniques, methods and approaches in the teaching and the learning process itself through various research. As for the art part of the teaching is mainly the realization of the educators like us may not be able to rely merely on the research results for every hurdle the students are facing in their learning process and to acknowledge that every educators has his own unique ways in tackling matters based on their knowledge and amount of experiences. For instance, teaching English language. The content knowledge is similar but how we disseminate the knowledge to the students may differ from one instructor to another. In the education world where all the traditional methods and thinking meet the modern demands and the fast pace of information acceptance and the continuous changing landscape of education, educators need to strive to maintain the rich and complex spirit of teaching in order to encourage and inspire future generations. To be effective educators, I believe that we must know how to blend the art and science of teaching and in the same time embracing, fostering and celebrating them during our teaching. For the art of teaching, it related closely to the way the instructors are orchestrating the lessons with the students suit to their interests and learning preferences. Educators need to enshrine the students prior to planning the lessons and the activities to be included as well as designing the suitable assessments and tasks to be done by them. This is supported by Robert J. Marzano in his book The Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction where he emphasis in finding the balances between the necessity of research-based data with the equally vital need to understand the strengths and the weaknesses of individual students. As the conclusion, I would say that, an educator may not know the ultimate best way for her students to learn but she will try her best to cater to everyone's needs and preferences as every brain is unique and teaching is truly a part art and a part science.

There is a new lecturer in your faculty and you are assigned to help him/her as a peer mentor. Briefly describe THREE (3) aspects in university teaching and learning that you think are critically important to share with your colleague. Support your explanation with relevant examples based on your personal experiences or readings.
_______________________________________________________________________________
1. Active learning
Students need to encourage to be active in their learning. The key goal of an instructor is to facilitate and support the learning of his/her students. understanding how the learning occurs, what condition support learning and how to maximize students' learning potentials are key elements of being effective university teacher (Krause, 2005). Students need to take charge of their learning to make the learning more meaningful and effective. Get them to involve in tasks that require collaboration where everyone will contribute something into them. As lecturers we need to structure the tasks to maximize collaboration and accelerate learning experience through the team-based learning. From my experience in assigning group tasks, too many group members may lead to the existence of free riders. The best number per group would be around 3-4 people depending on the complexity of the tasks. Kagan (1994) stated that good structuring of the learning activities is the key toward the eminent of individual accountability, equal participation and simultaneous interaction.

2. Sound assessment practice
Assessment has been and remains a contentious and a frequently trivialized aspect of teaching and learning within higher education (Knapper, 2010). As lecturers we are responsible to revise and design assessments to our students. Assessing our students's progress is essential as it one of the way to determine the effectiveness of our teaching and help us to improve the weaknesses of the teaching and the way we are disseminating the knowledge. The design of the assessment must be beneficial in assessing the relevant generic skills as well as subject specific knowledge and embedded the higher order thinking skills through the questions.

3. The impact of the technology on higher education
The use of technologies must be take into consideration since blended learning in this university is being emphasize. Despite the traditional method of lecture and face to face interactions, lecturers need to make use another technology to suit the students' interest and what they know best which is the use of internet. Lecturers need to be pro-active using the e-Learning enrichment and Advancement Platform (eLeap) and other media of communications such as whatapp and telegram applications to interact with the students.

Reflective Educators – If you can compose your legacy as an educator, what would you write about? Write your thoughts about your 'last lecture'.

_________________________________________________________________________________

If this is to be my last lecture, I would tell 5 important things in life that I wish my students and my children to remember;

1. Your youth before your old age
Seek and gain knowledge while you are still young and you have full energy in your entire body. Make yourself useful and do your part of contributions to your parents, family, community and nations. Although learning is a whole life journey but take advantage of your youth to learn, discover and create knowledge for the benefits of humanity.

2. Your health before your sickness
With good health, we can optimize our learning. Sickness will not stop the learning journey but it will surely cause it to be halted. Learn and seek for knowledge whenever you can. Travel a lot because it helps in maturing our minds and enrich our experiences thus helping to widen our perspectives of lives and matters. While we are healthy, do good deeds to our parents, community and country and most importantly live lives to the fullest.

3. Your wealth before your poverty
If you are wealthy, make use of your wealth towards good reasons and purpose. Give charity, help others and be kind. Wealth is not only in terms of property, it can be seen in subjective ways.

4. Your free time before you are preoccupied
Optimize the time we have for learning, contributing and doing good deeds. Divide your time smartly. Spare time for family members and enjoy the time we have with good and beneficial activities. Create great memorable memories with them. Pursue your dreams regardless how silly they are to the ears of others.

5. Your life before your death
Make your life meaningful and full of joy. A day without laughter is a day wasted. Always remember to pray, love and enjoy life as it is and to muslims, never leave your solat because it is the pillar of our religion. Also remember, the greatest human is not the strongest among them, the greatest human is the most loving of all. Love and respect yourself, your family and friends and disseminate knowledge whenever you can. Last but not least, let the person/people you love to know how much you love her/him/them everyday as we never know when would be the final farewell for us to meet them again and if tomorrow never comes.
