Social Class

Health

Jeannette and her siblings definitely faced troubles with their social class and health. While their parents has some opportunity's to be in a better situation they actively chose to be homeless giving the children a difficult situation to live in. Health is a problem as well because like said in the book they do not always have food and often go hungry. They also have money problems and owe many different people money. Their parents do not really trust doctors as well and a example of endangering the children health is often taking the children from hospitals earlier than they should.

After getting burned from a fire the doctors told Jeannette she was going to be ok and she responded by saying "I Know... But if im not, thats ok, too.". This stuck out to me because it seemed as if she did not really care about what happens to her, the only thing I could relate this to was optimism in a way.

Questions:

Choose a significant event that occurs in your reading. What do you think the author's purpose was in telling that part of the story?

One significant event would be when Jeannette is in the hospital for burns and she likes it there a lot because there is everything that she needs in there, but her father does not have the same view and takes her from the hospital. I believe that her purpose in telling this was to show us the situations she grew up in and how he parents were.

What tone and mood are created at various parts of the work?

While the mood is sometimes happy because Jeannette was happy most of the time it show a sense of rough situations and a struggle for the basics like food.

How effective is the author’s use of dialogue? How does dialogue enhance the storytelling?

The author is very effective in the storytelling by showing and telling us her personal view which gives us a good perspective of how her life was growing up as a child.

Q#1 - How does The Meaning of a Text Change as you Reread it?

I found that sometimes when I was reading the text or rereading it I was changing my perspective of the people in the text. For example sometimes I felt that the dad was a good person or father and other times I viewed him as a terrible father. Overall the more I read the text I get different views of the characters which affects how I view them overall.

Q#2 - How do your Values alter the Perception of the Text?

One of my values is to do what makes you happy in life which affects how I see the parents because even though I think they are bad parents I do not blame them for what they are doing. The father does not want to follow everyone's orders and he wants to do his own thing and the mother is the same she wants to paint and do other things. I can relate to this which makes me feel sympathetic to them but I still view them as bad parents.

Q#6 - What was the work’s original intended audience? To what extent are you similar or different from that audience?

I believe that the book was intended to be read by anyone but I think that the author was trying to target children that might be in the same situation or parents in this situation.

When Jeannette and her siblings were going hungry and their dad saw them he brought them food at school. He Acted as if he did not really know they ever went hungry, and at the school he said "Have I ever let you down?" and Brian responded by saying "Yes" when he could not hear. This shows how the kids are starting to lose their trust in their dad and that stuck out to me.

Culture

Jeannette and her siblings face many issues due to their parents culture and how they raised them. Their parenting style causes them to be in tough situations that they could avoid, as well as their bad financial decisions. They could be living a stable life if it were not for the style and culture of how they grew up. Their grandmother was trying to help them and if they just stuck to both parents having stable jobs the children could have had a much more stable and healthy childhood.
