Daemon Hatfield, writing for IGN, praised the elements when playing as Jason, but criticized the gameplay of the teenagers, along with the flaws that almost eliminate the humor of "stupid fun".
Polygon declared that "Friday the 13th: The Game mimics the surface level of the classic movie series, but loses its spirit. GameSpot censured the incarnations of the console for being "intermittently unreadable", saying that "private games with friends are sometimes possible, but if you want to join a band of strangers online in the comfort of your couch, you will be totally out of luck or even stuck waiting more than ten minutes for a match - after days without being able to play at all." Gamespot also cited the lack of maps, inconsistent frame rates, precarious animations and poor collision detection as reasons to discover that the game was still unfinished, even at its launch.
