Note: this is a Charge RN example, so I acknowledge yours may vary greatly!

(1) I once had a family member upset that they were place in a double-bedded room. The bedside nurse asked me to go in and talk with the family because they were asking for a private room. (2) I talked with the bedside RN and asked what they had discussed with the family already. Then I went and listened to the families concerns. They were concerned that their patient would get sick from the other patient in the room. I assured them that if patients are contagious, then they get a single-bedded room. I emailed my leadership letting them know that it may come up again, and that a touchpoint with a leader may be helpful. (3) It helped build rapport by starting with asking them their concerns and listening to them. And it helped by calmly answering their questions. Going into the conversation I had made some assumptions that they were going to be irrational, but they were very reasonable. (4) I would tell them to approach with curiosity and just listen first.

Phone Consultation

We have had a few patients lately that speak a language other than English that have had a hard time getting in touch with our Home Care Department via phone. This was escalated and our team is in the midst of process improvement. It is important for all of our families to be able to reach Home Care Services no matter what time of day it is if they have questions. Navigating this process is very challenging and confusing, especially when you can't understand the options provided to you over the phone. This is a work in progress and hopefully we will have a more straight forward plan for our families in the future!
