What Science is and how it works

Before NS 100 my thinking on the concept of science was not exciting. I can't say I had any good reflections on science in the past so science wasn't my strong suite. My thinking on how science works after taking NS 100 has added some critical thinking about science and its components to help put things into perspective. It was interesting learning on how animals change because of genetics and the environment, and because of these elements it can cause a beginning and end of a generation.

How microscopic changes have macroscopic effects.

My grandparents grew many vegetables, strawberry and also had a watermelon farm that we would play in as kids, or we would help pick for special cookouts during the summer. On the surface with the naked eye, you could not see the micro bugs that lived on the surface of all the beautiful produce that we would just pluck and pop in our mouth. In learning about the effects of microscopic changes and how we see things on the surface have affected my thinking on what I just pop in my mouth without a closer look.

The characteristics of life and what it means to be alive.

Growing up in a religious household we are taught about God and all of his wonderful makings of the world. Before NS 100 that was the only way I saw the science of life and what it means to be alive. Characteristics define life, from bacteria to whales for all living organisms share key characterlike values. I feel my thinking has grown more with understanding the properties that come with making a life from the womb and the many transitions DNA and RNA play a part in reproduction, and evolution of living organism. After this experience I believe I can use these values to help students understand how to preserve life ahead and what it means to be alive another 20 years from now.

How the scientific method relates to scientific inquiry and how inquiry-based learning impacts student learning.

The scientific method is critical for students to develop the skills in cognitive thinking. Through the steps of Inquiry based learning students are developing connections, engagement, and real-world solutions. Before NS 100 I never knew that implementing this method would work for other subjects in the classroom. My thinking on this topic has expanded in thinking about how to teach and reach students in the classroom while managing today's world living. I feel I can further grow with my students by using inquiry-based thinking in and outside the classroom.

I certainly believe my experiences in NS 100 will help me relate with my students in connection with implementing cognitive thinking, helping them be proficient in problem solving, building goal-oriented activities, and developed application to real-world situations. As we worked on the different mutations in our bunny project, it helped me understand that testing many different scenarios of Natural selection students can learn to expand their thinking in the classroom amongst their peers.

How your scientific perspective has changed since the beginning of the semester.

In the beginning of the semester, I looked at science in a different way, hard to understand, lots of fundamental scientific arguments, and lots of research about the unknown which has always been very intimidating for me. Since taking NS 100, I know how to respect science in an appreciative way to not only save lives but the lives yet to be conceived. My mother had complications in childbearing and with the scientific thinking, scientific method and also genetic testing my mother was able to birth 2 children. As I continue to grow in my own critical thinking about science and my experiences, I will continue to expand my knowledge on evolution.
