When Swedish Lutherans first immigrated to Andersonville, they would hold small religious meetings in homes to sing and pray. In 1880, the First Free founders began advertising for their first communion service. It wasn't until 1914 that the church was officially named the "First Swedish Evangelical Free Church of Chicago. In 1926, they switched their official language from Swedish to English to fit the community's approaching demographic shift.

Ebenezer Lutheran Church, West Foster Avenue, Chicago, IL

Chartered in 1892, though not fully established until 1902, the Ebenezer Lutheran Church became known as Chicago's "Swedish Cathedral" due to its Gothic limestone architecture. Though it originally started out as just a place of worship, it began to be used as a community center, hosting music and theatre performances. Throughout the 40s and 50s, Andersonville lost a lot of its Swedish community as they shifted to the suburbs, Ebenezer Church's official language switched from Swedish to English in order to serve more of the neighborhood as different cultures migrated to Andersonville.

North Shore Baptist Church, North Lakewood Avenue, Chicago, IL

Was founded in 1905. Has grown and shifted from being predominantly European-American to include other ethnic groups that came in the area since its founding. Has been through multiple efforts to connect with the various ethnic groups coming into the neighborhood. The first attempt was an effort to connect with other ethnicities was a mission school established in 1924 for the Chinese. It grew over time until 1980 when they decided to form its own congregation. This new congregation is called the Chicago Chinese Baptist Church and the two have close ties due to their history.

Philadelphia Church, North Clark Street, Chicago, IL

The Philadelphia Church is a nondenominational, full-gospel community of believers. The church building was originally a Capital Savings Bank, constructed in 1921. It was designed in the classical revival style, which was a favored bank style at the time. This bank was established as the successor to the Swedish American State Bank, which began in 1913. The symbolic "Jesus Saves" sign is to this day a unique Chicago landmark.

After the Great Depression in the 1920s Chicago saw a lot of their original Swedish population moving to the suburbs. So, in October of 1964 Andersonville was rededicated to the Swedish immigrants by the mayor of Chicago. The following summer the Swedes of Andersonville reinstated the tradition of celebrating the summer solstice. They started hosting Midsommarfest.

St Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church, North Paulina Street, Chicago, IL

Was formed in 1904. It was originally a German and Luxembourger parish. One thing that makes this church stand out among the rest that we saw is the lavish interior and decorated ceiling. Taking a look inside the other churches from the outside, they looked really bland and we thought that most of them looked quite bare and not like what we thought of when thinking of the word "church". The St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church was quite the opposite, looking great from both the inside and the out.

Swedish American Museum, North Clark Street, Chicago, IL, USA

The Swedish American Museum was established in 1976 to show the culture, art, and history of the Swedish in Chicago. The most notable exhibit in the museum is The Dream of America: Swedish Immigration to Chicago. The exhibit displays the hardships of Swedish immigrants in the 1800s through artifacts, pictures, and descriptions.
