In the paragraph two The author uses direct characterization by describing doodle. He says"He seemed all head, with a tiny body that was red and shriveled like an old mans."(Hurst 1) The narrator uses physical traits of how doodle looks to describe doodle. If doodle has a big head and a tiny body and shriveled like an old man then you can tell how doodle isn't very strong or "normal."

Plot Synopsis

The exposition of the story is when the narrator aka the older brother starts introducing doodle. He says a lot of mean things to him like in paragraph two "Doodle was born when I was seven and was, from the start, a disappointment."(Hurst 1) The author is telling the story in the green parlor about what happened in his childhood. His Childhood is the setting for most of the short story. The rising action is when they started going home because of the thunderstorm. The climax is when the narrator starts running and doodle cant catch up. The narrator leaves doodle behind and tries to save himself. The Falling action is when the wind died and the narrator waits for doodle to come and starts heading back to look for doodle. Lastly the resolution isn't really a solution but its a very sad ending. The narrator finds doodle sitting on the ground with his head buried in his arms and figures out he is dead. The problem of the narrator being embarrassed of doodle for being different is solved because now that doodle is dead he doesn't have to worry about it. Its not a great solution. I'm pretty sure the older brother didn't want that to happen to doodle and probably regrets everything he said and did.

This is a form of foreshadowing! This quote comes from paragraph 1
0 and comes again in paragraph 41 on page 3. The first time Doodle says "Don't leave me, Brother! Don't leave me!" is when the narrator is stating how even when its sunny outside doodle is still scared and clingy towards the narrator. Then it gets stated again when the older brother (narrator) runs and leaves doodle behind in the storm. While the narrator is running he hears doodle cry out the quote. The narrator foreshadowed of what was going to happen in the future.

The scarlet ibis shows a symbol of death. The bird first gets stated on page 3 when the narrators family sees the bird dying outside through the window. The bird dies under the bleeding tree. Later into the story doodle dies and the narrator describes his death like the birds death. Doodle was also bleeding and what a coincidence the bird died under "the bleeding tree" which is a tree with red sap and doodle died under a bush full with blood.

"He collapsed on to the grass like a half-empty flour sack."(Hurst 2) Shows figurative language by describing how doodles body fell on the grass. It also gives a idea to the reader of doodles body solidity because he says like a half empty flour sack. When a half empty flour sack falls it flops on the ground. After that sentence the narrator says that he had no bones, he was just kidding because doodle had little legs with fat.
