Through the thoughts, actions, and the thoughts from another character. The way mrs. Mallard talked about him, made him seem the person that never really notice or cared as much, possibly even seemed to be. And he was the person that caused the death of mrs. Mallard with her heart trouble. In the story it revealed only his physical traits, but seemed as careless and suspicious as his character through the end of the story.

In " The Story of an Hour", the central conflict is Human vs. self. When Mrs. Mallard was given the news about her husbands death, she felt as if her soul felt dull and heart broken. Then suddenly she realized, and felt something," She
said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!" The vacant stare and the look of terror
that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and
the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body." - (Chopin 2) She felt "free", that she realized that there are times when she loved her husband but really never loved him. She felt very happy, like she wanted to move on with being free with ease .And when a person loses someone they love, it can impact them for a very long time. Making it hard for them to move on.

What could
love, the unsolved mystery, count for in the face of this possession of self-assertion which she
suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being!", "He stood amazed at Josephine's
piercing cry; at Richards' quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife...
When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease—of joy that kills." - ( Chopin 2-3)
This is human vs.human conflict because of the relationship of mrs. Mallard and Brently Mallard, but mostly how mrs. Mallard felt about it. Possibly something happened between them impacting the events happening in the story. How it also got to the point of mrs. Mallard husband got surpassingly "died or got killed" to be actually honest and happy for herself. And how she really felt that made her realized she never felt she really lived her life for herself. Which when she finally felt happy, Brently Mallards appearance and carelessness made mrs. Mallard die from " heart disease from joy", which really was shock.

Through out this whole story, it made mrs. Mallard realized how she really felt about herself, and her relationship with her husband. It all became at the point when she was revealed that her husband died. Of course she was in grief and felt heart broken. But after having time alone with herself. Thinking for how she truly felt, suddenly she felt joyful. She didn't feel so sad, she had a realization that she was happy, truly happy. She realized she will be moving on and not weep, that she will be true and be independent for herself. But when she came out feeling confident, she saw her husband alive, she died of shock. But I also believe she died of regret and fear. Because this all could've been avoided, if she was honest with herself, and that maybe said how she felt to her husband before all this happened, she could've continued on her life for herself.

She noticed everything looked so vibrant and filled with “ life”. It gave her a perspective of how she truly felt about herself, and if she really loved her husband, and she really didn’t.
Symbolism: The Roomy Armchair - Comfort

"Into this she sank,
pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.", "She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except
when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep
continues to sob in its dreams." - ( Chopin 2 )
In " The Story of an Hour " the armchair symbolizes comfort in the story. It represents comfort because the armchair was the thing that comfort mrs. Mallard when she was in grief and exhaustion impacted herself badly. And the armchair was roomy and comfortable so she was in it, and seemed to try easing her feelings of grief and exhaustion. Sometimes people need comfort, not with a person but by themselves with something comfortable by their side sometimes. So when we have something that provides us comfort by our side, it gives them time to process how they're feeling an witness a cartain event or things themselves. Thats how it was with mrs. mallard when she was alone, and give time for herself to process and see how she truly felt throughout this story.

The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was
crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly,
and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves." -( Chopin 1)
This piece of imagery is important because Mrs. Mallard is witnessing all of the things she senses in the open window. The open window on the other side showing a perspective of what it should be to be free, and maybe have some time to think for herself. Probrally try to live a life that she should live with joy and independent.

They stayed keen and bright.", "She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death;
the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead." - ( Chopin 2)
In the story when mrs. Mallard was given the news that her husband died, and she was heartbroken, depressed and dull. But after a short time with herself, she felt like she was ready to move on with herself and felt joyful. It represents situational irony because when a person loses someone they deeply care & loved about, it impacts them for a long amount of time, and processing through it. But in the story she felt sad, but yet felt joyful and already moved on from her husbands death, which is surprising because it seemed like the opposite of what was expected to be in the story.

She was beginning to recognize this thing that
was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will—as powerless
as her two white slender hands would have been." -(Chopin 2)
This piece of imagery is significant to the story because it's revealing or possibly foreshadowing of a strong feeling that will most likely impact the story. A strong feeling after having a realization effected how she truly felt. How it leads her to the upcoming point when she was told the news about her husbands death. It seemed like a strong feeling that she kept hidden, not being honest, and always dulled and buried it. And how that feeling could've effected her relationship with her husband & herself. Making it a possibility that it could impact mrs. Mallard negatively further on in the story.
