Daryll: Darryl might be Marcus' best friend, but he gets very few pages in this book.  Darryl resists doing things like skipping school, but lets Marcus talk him into it. He also has a longstanding crush on Van. He's in Marcus's inner posse-of-four; Jolu describes him as the "second-in-command, the guy who had it all organized.
Van:  Van makes most of the great ideas that inspire Marcus. But then things get sticky with her and the rest of the group. Van walks away from Marcus because she can't watch him suffer. Her parents fled from North Korea, so they know about harsh governments.
Jolu: Jolu's a programmer and technical whiz kid. Jolu's really good at coding; he makes it so that normal internet traffic completely changes its ratio of encrypted data. He's also clear-headed and realistic.
Fred Benson: A vice principal at Cesar Chavez High School with an axe to grind, Mr. Benson's mostly important because he fights with Marcus. We get Mr. Benson's personal stats right up front, showing us that Marcus knows more about Benson than Benson knows about Marcus.
Ms. Galvez: She teaches about people making a difference and fighting for causes they believe in. Ms. Galvez is pro independent thinking, which means she clashes with the schools restrictive surveillance regime.
Charles: Charles's the bully and snitch at Cesar Chavez High School.
