I have chosen to base my cross-curricular plan on the Segedunum Roman Fort, which is situated in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, England. I chose this specific location as I visited Segedunum myself whilst I was in primary school and I found that this trip was extremely memorable.

Emperor Hadrian, in AD122, ordered a defence system to be constructed to protect the Roman Empire from the North. As a result, Hadrian's Wall was created; thus, Segedunum was established to protect '...the eastern end of the Wall...' and provide a home to six-hundred Roman soldiers.

This theme explicitly connects to the location choice due to the predominant focus on the Roman Empire; however, this theme also relates to the Primary National Curriculum with regards to a range of subjects (focusing on key Stage Two).

Regarding the subject that is history, the Primary National Curriculum states, that children should be educated on 'the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain'; therefore, this demonstrates a direct link between history and my chosen theme.

Specifically, the criteria within the Primary National Curriculum for history, in relation to the Romans suggests, that children could be taught about the 'successful invasion by Claudius and conquest, including Hadrian's Wall'; therefore, reinforcing the link between history and my theme of choice, i.e. the Romans.

The Primary National Curriculum highlights, that Key Stage Two students should be taught to observe their surroundings through the use of sketch books; therefore, an opportunity for cross-curricular teaching and learning is possible as the students could sketch their findings from this location; therefore, demonstrating a direct link between art and the selected theme.

The curriculum also suggests, that children should be taught about a range of materials; therefore, the children may sketch their observations using a range of materials, whilst also being exposed to different materials within this location. Furthermore, a link is evident between this subject and the selected theme.

Regarding KS2 Geography, the Primary National Curriculum states, that children should be taught:
- Locational knowledge
- Place knowledge
- Human and physical geography
- Geographical skills and fieldwork.
Furthermore, I believe that the selected theme enables an exploration into the above criteria as the children could be taught about the geographical history of The Roman Empire and they could also map this location; thus, providing further opportunity for cross-curricular teaching and learning.
