Overview - Tico-Tico no Fubá is a Brazilian choro song written by Zequinha de Abreu in 1917, hence placing this piece under the late romantic era (1851–1920). Outside Brazil, the song reached its peak popularity in the 1940s. 

The use of pacing - Pacing is the speed at which a piece of music is played. In violin playing, pacing is important for both accuracy and expression.

Accuracy - When a piece of music is played at a consistent pace, it is easier for the violinist to keep track of the notes and to play them accurately. If the pace is too fast, the violinist may make mistakes, and if the pace is too slow, the violinist may lose interest or become bored.

Expressive Outcome - The pacing of a piece of music can also affect its expression. For example, a slow, deliberate pace can create a sense of sadness or solemnity, while a fast, energetic pace can create a sense of joy or excitement.
There are a few different ways to use pacing in violin playing to improve accuracy and expression.


Take to The Hills

Overview - Take to The Hills was released in 2019, hence making this piece fall under the category of the 20th and 21st centuries. This piece was composed by Mary Cohen, a British educational composer with over sixty publications for strings in print, and her music is set by the major examining bodies worldwide.

The use of characteristics within the 20th and 21st period  –Characteristics of music that are stylistic towards the category of the 20th and 21st centuries include an increase of expression in tonality, texture, and uses of polyrhythm within pieces.


Crispin The Mischievous

Overview - 'Crispin The Mischievous' was composed by Elena Kats-Chernin, a Soviet-Australian composer; she composed music in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The use of vibrato (articulation) - Vibrato is a slight fluctuation in pitch that is created by the violinist moving their finger back and forth on the fingerboard. This creates a shimmering, expressive sound that can be used to add warmth and richness to a note. Vibrato is often used in long, sustained notes, but it can also be used in shorter notes to add emphasis or drama.

The use of dynamics - Dynamics refers to the loudness or softness of a note. Violinists can control dynamics by varying the amount of bow pressure, the speed of the bow, and the distance of the bow from the bridge. Exercise 2 (Technical): String crossings, Blocked 5th's, and Tunneling - Challenges within this exercise include how it is difficult to accurately place the left-hand finger on the correct string, especially when the string crossings are fast or complex. This can lead to intonation problems.

Exercise 3 (Expressive): Tone development in higher positions (Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5) - Challenges within this exercise include that the finger spacing becomes smaller as I move up the fingerboard, which makes it more difficult to place the fingers accurately, this therefore makes it difficult to produce a clear, controlled sound. The bow needs to be played closer to the bridge in the higher positions in order to produce a good sound, as this can be difficult to do, especially for beginners. Lastly, It can be difficult to stay in tune in the higher positions, this is because the notes are closer together and the finger spacing is smaller.

Exercise 4 (Expressive): Avec Simplicité (With Simplicity of Expression) - Challenges within this exercise include that the violin is a small instrument with a limited dynamic range, which means that it can be difficult for me to produce a wide range of volume and tone, hence limiting expressiveness. In addition, the violin has no frets, which means that I must rely on my ear and muscle memory to place my fingers in the correct position on the fingerboard. This can be difficult, especially when playing fast passages or in high positions. Lastly, the violin is a very sensitive instrument. Even the slightest changes in bow pressure, finger pressure, or vibrato can affect the sound. This can make it difficult to control the expressiveness of the sound.
