Is Reading Still Reading?

"It seems to us that digital texts certainly have changed our practices. We find that digital reading allows us to more easily
make reader-to-reader and text-to-other-reader connections. Digitally
delivered texts allow us to quickly highlight, extract, annotate, and then
share our thoughts about what we’re reading with others through social
networking sites." (Beers and Probst, 2013, p. 13)

This quote stuck out to me, as it highlights reader connections. It makes the argument that it allows even more connections to be made, something we learn is necessary to create meaning from Buehl.

"Researchers argue that prior knowledge —what a person already knows —may be the most important variable for reading comprehension." (Buehl, 2014, pg. 4).

In this way, one could argue that while all forms of reading are necessary, online forms may help comprehension.

As I apply this to my teaching identity, it makes me think about what independent looks like in a Language Arts Classroom. In my own experience, students weren't allowed to read on things like Kindles, as they may become distracted. However, these quotes make me think that in an effective classroom, all forms of reading should be used, as comprehension comes in different forms.

As a teacher, I am more engaged if I enjoy the content, so students likely will be too. And if it is an independent novel, in any form or type, at least they are reading at all

I really enjoyed reading both of these texts. As a future English Educator, reading comprehension is always at the forefront of my mind. I have a lot of experience engaging with surface processing if what I am reading isn't stimulating, so I was interested to learn more about why this occurs. The Beers and Probst article explains why reading in different forms isn't cause for any alarm, and Buehl builds on that idea, explaining how comprehension can be affected with any type of reading.
