No is my answer but the reasoning gets to be tricky. I don't think that scientific discoveries are bad. Knowledge and understanding is not bad just by itself. It is what is done with that knowledge that gets into the right and wrong, good and bad aspect. I have had many ideas about things that seemed like good ideas to me. When others pointed out to me the "bad" ways the idea could be used I had to rethink my original idea. I believe that you learn or discover things like the atomic bomb before you start imagining the down side to them. Most people (yes, there are exceptions) don't discover or invent things out of evil intentions but what is done with the knowledge after is often out of their hands. So I stand by my NO answer but the tug of war part remains in my reasonings and I often have the tug of war with myself. Sheri Sheridan

Yes. The German and Japanese scientists who performed horrific experiments during ww2 made some profound discoveries. Some argue the end justifies the means, but there is no justifying what they did for the sake of "science". Knowledge is power, but power corrupts. I often hear people say good came out of the bad, so therefore it is ok. I say no way. Just because you can do something doesn't mean it is to be done.

Besides, we learned from these mistakes in our past, we learnt not do what these people did before us.

But then, it is giving me the example of an inventions such as the atomic bomb not a discovery. If I look at it from the side of inventions I will be on the no side of the dilemma because a bomb like that could kill millions of people even after it was detonated due to its radiation problem.

So, if I had to respond to the prompt as is written, I would have to say no because there would be some aspects of the discovery that would be beneficial. The internet is an example of a discovery that has brought on many negative implications that were not envisioned by the individual who conceived of the idea. But, many benefits to society have come from it, from empowerment and awareness, to bringing people together in a way not possible before.

This helps us further develop the understanding of the topic in the specific field of study.

Yes, Weapons in general lead to death and destruction, but they also lead to defense and preservation of life. The atomic bomb was a weapon that killed without a chance to fight back. It was made to kill and destroy which it did easily. Now, some would say this weapon was meant as a defensive measure in a war. I would argue that this measure was absolutely overkill. Wars are created by higher up people in governments. They are not created by civilians working 9-5s to provide for their families. The lives taken by the atomic bomb were innocent lives that had very little to do with the war.

Yes, there are some inventions that are bad and/or can be used for bad by someone else other than the originator of the invention. Though many inventions can and will be abused, some things just shouldn't be created to begin with due to the destructive nature of them. The atomic bomb changed the face of warfare forever. It is scary to think of people improving on this invention knowing it can destroy the human race in a matter of seconds.

I also think of the many chemical compounds that have been discovered that are used in manufacturing, fertilizers, and other industries that pollute our air and water. This has caused permanent damage to our Earth.

Yes. Scientific discoveries are judged as "good" or "bad" by balancing multiple factors that contribute to their overall value to humanity. Some can be clearly labeled as better than the others: penicillin is good, cigarettes are not. But many discoveries are hard to place in either category: things like plastic or automobiles, which have high utility value, but contribute to pollution and a climate change. The discovery of atomic energy could have been a blessing for a human kind as a source of clean energy. However, the creation of an atomic bomb that in the wrong hands can destroy an entire Planet within a few hours does not compensate for whatever good intentions someone has had while contemplating it. As the old adage goes: " The road to Hell..."

No, I do not believe a scientific discovery can be considered bad. It is always good to search for answers or knowledge. Knowledge in a vacuum has no inherit properties of good or bad. It is how one chooses to apply that knowledge that is good or bad. Understanding how someone can die is not bad, ensuring that someone dies however, is bad.

Yes, some scientific discoveries had good intentions but didn't go so well for the ones that were at the hands of the discovery. While in the past history of discoveries there was not known knowledge of the long term effects. Einstein's equation opened the world to possibilities but, it also opened the world to mass destruction when J. Robert Oppenheimer was head of the team that created the first atomic bomb that was detonated. No one knew what that would bring later on but it brought on many complications later for the people that handled the atomic bombs and that were exposed to them.

I think given what we most commonly know about atomic bombs - the chaos, destruction to societies and planet, loss of life - has most people perceiving them in a negative light; an extremely bright light (get it?). So, we know how atomic bombs have been used historically, but what if they could be used to create life? A study done at Stanford made calculations about nuking Mars' ice cap to vaporize the CO2 and also create water vapor - both are highly effective greenhouse gasses that can thicken the thin atmosphere of Mars and regulate the temperature to be more habitable for life. The study concluded that the entire world's arsenal of nuclear weapons would not yield a sufficient outcome, but only a fraction of what was needed. But, think of the analogy of a firecracker in the palm of an open hand going off, and a firecracker in the palm of a closed hand going off. Perhaps the nukes would need to be drilled into the ice before detonation to have a greater impact. There's also a risk that this forced terraforming could destroy what chances of life are already there. Obviously more studies need to be conducted to determine the pros and cons. Perhaps we can innovate better alternatives than a good atomic bomb yielding potentially bad or ineffective results.

I wanted to start this by saying I do think that some discoveries are bad even when the intentions are good. There are many things that went awry even if someone wanted the best. Lets take strip mining. Using coal as a resource for industry was huge! However, it is a big pollutant, is finite in its availability, and the way we get it has destroyed parts of the Earth. Then, I realized that the destruction was the catalyst to finding other ways to produce power, which has been really good for us in terms of fixing what we already messed up.

There are many things created for good and individuals will take it and use it for the wrong reasons. Like social media for example. It was created to keep friends and family connected, but often times people use it for malice.

I don't think that anything is in and of itself bad. I think it that is all about how things are used. So the atomic bomb itself is not bad, but when it is used for evil purposes, that would be bad. However, if somehow it could be repurposed for a positive use, that would be using it for good.
Yes, Even though the atomic bomb was created with good intentions, individuals have make it bad due to their negative intentions.

I think one must examine why the discovery was made. There is a very grey area between bad and good when thinking about things like the atomic bomb. I'm sure because of the atomic bomb, there was much scientific research that followed that might not have happened without it. I also think that it is hard to say that a discovery that killed so many people was good.

No, I don't think they are bad just because they discovered it. We, the humans are the ones that change everything for good or bad, that will depend on the intentions and goals. The same concept could apply to the airplanes, they were invented to transport people from one place to another in a shorter period of time, not to carry guns, bombs and weapons!
