AI has become a useful tool within the healthcare industry. From pathology to diagnosis, all the way to monitoring. AI has been of great help for a quick turnaround in patient care. I specifically chose to research this industry because it is one I am most interested in. I currently work as a dental assistant and hope to become a social worker at a hospital. I have always been fascinated by healthcare and appreciative of the lengths providers will go to give their patients the best of care. Medicine is constantly evolving, and over time, we have seen illnesses that were once incurable are now curable or have better treatments with less side effects. With the help of AI, clinicians are even able to detect illnesses years before a person can show symptoms. Knowledge is key, and learning more about how the industry has changed and will continue to change is of great help.

Healthcare AI Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic Imaging has been transformed for the better thanks to AI. According to Cancer.gov, an AI deep learning tool has been created that will analyze MRI scans of brain tumors, predicting if such a tumor has the DH1 mutation. It aids in giving a patient a prognosis and reduces the need for biopsies, and shortens treatment planning. We can also see how it has even helped in mammography imaging through the use of AI-assisted screening and early detection. An algorithm is created to interpret mammograms for abnormalities or risk of developing breast cancer. Similar algorithms, combined with imaging tools, can enhance the detection of cervical precancer cells. I found this to be very interesting since the earlier a doctor can detect cancer, the sooner they can begin interventions.

Deep learning AI helps process digitized tissue samples to detect cancer that may be present. This helps pathologists work faster in getting results back to both the provider and patients. Scanning slides digitally eliminates the need for pathologists to have to sit at a microscope to view them. Deep learning has also been programmed to read genome sequences and detect genetic mutations through machine learned algorithms. There are also biomarkers that find features that correlate with how a patient can respond to treatment by using MultiModal Models. Patients are able to avoid waiting weeks or months to get results and can have information back in days, which may be vital if the patient has an aggressive form of cancer and needs to start treatment sooner rather than later.

Sugar IQ APP, was created to help diabetics in real time be able to check their glucose levels at the palms of their hands. It is the first stand alone CGM System helping to prevent highs and lows and can predict them an hour before they occur. This also aids with tracking potential triggers or can track if there is a specific hour in which a patient should or shouldn't eat. Back in April, I was on a flight with my aunt, who is diabetic. We were flying to my grandfather’s funeral the same day we found out he had passed. She hadn’t eaten anything since she heard the news. Unfortunately, my cousin failed to let me know this vital information. A diabetic cannot and shouldn't go many hours between meals. Their glucose levels will drop suddenly and especially being in the air with the pressure; she could have fainted in the air, or the pressure and heat of where we landed could have given her a heart attack or stroke. This type of technology is vital for my aunt, given her age and conditions.

With new AI algorithms in the healthcare industry on the rise, there are certainly a few concerns as well. There is always a risk with cybersecurity with almost everything nowadays. Patient privacy is one of the most important things that providers should prioritize. They should implement ways to prevent data breaches. These algorithms that may work using a specific pattern can also contain some form of bias as well. Clinicians should always reference their experience and knowledge in the field rather than solely rely on AI and should doublecheck.

I have enjoyed researching AI in the healthcare industry. Truly hits close to home, and cannot wait to continue hearing about the many more advances to come. Hoping it will continue to help the entire healthcare team, from pathology, radiology, oncology, nurses, and doctors, to better facilitate care and even prevent burnout for them! Many more lives will continue to be saved because of the advances that are currently happening and will continue to happen. This has influenced me into looking at AI in a more positive way rather than the negative connotations it tends to have. Anything can be used for the greater good.
