She then proceeds to work overtime to excel in the faction she chose and had to decide what people she could tell she was divergent. She would easily agree with Emerson's idea of  "trust[ing] thyself: [because] every heart vibrates to that iron string." All the decisions she made were only to better herself and she didn't trust others or put their opinion above her own. While some would say she acted impulsively, I believe "the power which resides in [her] is new in nature, and
none but [she] knows what that is which [she] can do, nor does [she] know until he has tried," which is shown throughout the series when she makes rash decisions to understand the world her own way, rather than depending upon what leadership told her. She constantly questions those in charge and could be seen as a free thinker, because she found a way to blend in while also rising above the rest and figured out the truth behind what was really going on. She who "would be a [woman] must be a nonconformist," is an idea that perfectly describes her character because she does not conform with society by being divergent. He does this to imply that he will do everything himself to claw his way to the top and won't let anyone get in his way. "Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist," can be seen when he uses the lyric "I'm an alien among the human beings." He is trying to get the point across that he is different from the rest and is "still up working while [you]...sleep."( lyrics are adjusted around profanity) He believes he is "out here on [his] own," because, "society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members," and will push him away for being different from everyone around him. The chorus states how he is all alone and shouldn't be because although he is different, he has great ideas that are reflected in his music. Many did not understand the changes that needed to be made that Lincoln was making. By ending slavery he pathed a new path for everyone in America to actually be equal like our constitution states. Many in the south did not understand that this change was for the better and some still don't today. Although all his progressive changes didn't amount to much other than ending slavery and did not prevent against the continued racism in our country, it was still something that many say as taking away their way of life and did not understand why he would make these changes. His great mind was only backed and understood by half the country, so if he was around today he might be able to make more change. Sadly he might not even get elected today because some wold look at his goals and aspirations as views from the radical left.
