These two were the Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Because of this, millions of Muslims trekked to west and East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh, And millions of Hindus and Sikhs went in the opposite direction to form India. Both sides decided to move in order to express their religion freely with others and avoid persecution.

Push factor: One push factor was the fear of war. Some of the British were afraid that India would turn into a war between the Muslims and the Hindus. This led to violence and many deaths. Along with this, if the Hindus were to stay and not migrate they would face racism and persecution from the Muslims. This can apply to the Muslims too.

2. Pull factors: migrating to the different two sides will have similar people just like them making them express their religion freely. This will also make it easier to get jobs and not be alienated.

3. Forced migration: The migration was forced. The Hindus and Muslims were forced to deprecate due to persecution, religion differences, and because the British rule was harsh and don’t give them any freedom. It is said that the Indian-Pakistan partition is one of the largest forced migrations. 

4. Regional Scale: The migration happened directly inside the Indian subcontinent within the separated nations of Pakistan and India.

5. Kinship Links: The  partition separated the people based on their culture, this meant they were allowed to express their religious beliefs and not be in threat of religious and ethnic persecution. With how other people were living and expressing freely without violence, more and more people would migrate wanting this lifestyle.

6.   • every migration flow generates a return or counter migration: With Muslims migrating to Pakistan there is a counter migration of Hindus and Sikhs counter migrating to India 
  • Majority of immigrants move a short distance: Most people only moved around in the Indian subcontinent traveling to places with the same religious beliefs.
  • Migrants who move longer distances tend to go to bigger city destinations: For Hindus who lived in Pakistan, Hen moving to India they would be more inclined to go to the larger and more developed Indian cities because of higher skilled and higher paying jobs.
  • Urban residents are less migratory than rural people: Muslims and Hindus already living in cities and in their respected countries stayed put and didn’t feel the need to move to more rural areas. 
  • Families are less likely to move internationally than young adults: Most big families only moved enough in order to stay in communities with their same religion. They didn’t want to leave too far away from their home country and settled in the Indian sub continent.
