Making Teens Feel Empowered

Erin's Hope For Friends believes that giving teens with Asperger’s and High Functioning Autism Spectrum (HFAS) the opportunity to meet and make new friends can change their life. I believe that all the teens that go to E's club are empowered every time they get to go because this is the only place where they feel safe and surrounded by a group of teens who are just like them. A lot of the teens who go to E's Club are home school and do not really see other teens their age. So coming to E's Club provides a place for these teens to make friends with other people their age. After volunteering here many times I can really tell that the kids feel confident and comfortable. By going to E's Club it truly helps the kids feel in control of their life and claiming what they want to do.

The goal is to create an environment where they are comfortable and can be themselves. They do this by offering structured activity each Friday and Saturday. That can be anything from karaoke, to movie night, to therapy dogs visiting. They also have a big, open space with gaming tables, board games, Xbox consoles, and other low stress activities for the kids to participate in so they can meet other HFAS teens and make friends.

Every Friday night that I have been to volunteer at Erin's Hope for Friends I find my self in awe over how great this organization is for these kids who have Aspergers and HFAS. As soon as you walk into E's Club you feel the sense of security and safety. All the kids who go there love being there and always have a smile on there face. It is so great to watch them interact with one another and it is even better when I interact with them. I usually go on Friday nights and I have really connected with this one teen. Him and I will sit and talk for at least half the time we are there. The other half of the time we are playing air hockey (his favorite game). It has been so rewarding being able to make these connections with these teens because it truly makes a difference in their lives. E's club is defiantly fulfilling all of their goals because each and every one of those kids love going there and have made a handful of friends from joining.

Asset Lens

At E's Club all the members and volunteers are viewed through the asset lens. They are viewed this way because everybody has a choice and can decide what they what to do while they are there. E's Club offers many activities for the teens to do, such as video games, playing board games, fuse ball, pool, and many other activities. The volunteers are there to make sure everything goes smoothly and to interact with the teens as well. I really do not think it would be viewed as a deficit lens because of how caring all the volunteers are and because of how much work is put into Friday and Saturday nights, so these teens can have a fun and an enjoyable time with their peers. An example of this would be when a teen comes up and asks to play a game with a volunteer and the volunteer says "of course i'd love to". If it was a deficit lens the volunteers would not be so happy to play with the teens.
