A script is more than just words you memorize. Upon reading a script you are able to identify the emotions needed for every scene and line and how to bring these out. The more you read it, the more you are immersed in the story, and the more you are able to express the character’s expressions, emotions, and soul. As actors, or the ones being seen on stage, it is important that you reach the audience and give them the right impact that you owe them. Without studying the script, the speed, harmony, flow, pitch, and overall articulation of words won’t be the best. Moreso, your body language may seem off or out of place because you have yet to know the true heart of the story your character is in. A script is the soul of a performance, and as a performer, it is your duty to convey that through words, actions, and whatever ways you might think of.

From the number of tips given by the speaker, I saw myself using the first tip the most out of all of them. When reading, I usually like to immerse myself into the narrative to be able better understand the context of the story. By knowing the intentions behind a certain scene and character, from what I’ve experienced, you’ll be able to tell your story in a manner that aligns with how you were able to interpret your lines and create a character that goes with it. Though it is good to immerse yourself within the script and create a world of your own context, one must remember to still be able to address the needs of the script and that comes with memorizing its ins and outs. Memorization is of utmost importance because it does not only show your capability as an actor but also your work ethic to be able to rehearse and bring a script to life—that is what I think is the marksmanship of a true actor: the capability to bring a narrative to life with spontaneity and personality through hard work and determination.

To me, it’s very important to study your script ahead of time, because it’s crucial for you to say your assigned lines in a proper manner when you’re acting. To study and memorize your scripts is also crucial in improving your image as an actor when you perform, because you will present a perfect line if you properly memorize it ahead of time. One must use articulation in reading your lines, because you will be able to convey the correct emotions you want to convey as you speak the said lines assigned to you. And as I speak from experience, I sometimes stutter when I’m speaking some lines, sometimes going to the point I stutter. As I eventually learned from that, I came to realize that one must really memorize his or her lines before you speak it out.

My simple answer to this is a quote by Abraham Lincoln that reads:

“If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend six hours sharpening my ax.”

When you get a script beforehand, you're given a head start in the development of your character. You get to know who they are, what their intentions are, what their goals are, and what inner conflict they may have. Knowing this would give you the best foundation as an actor: mastery. If you master your script, if you know your role from the inside out, front to back, it will give you the freedom to be able to play with your acting and adjust. When you're not caught up in remembering your lines or stage directions, you have the opportunity to be brought by the flow of the environment while you perform or film.

I always say that the thing I love best about acting is how much it relies on chemistry; combustibility, spontaneity, and viscerality. But we need to remember chemistry is, more often than not, the art of being exact. The mastery of your script is the measured chemicals; once you have that, you can go absolutely anywhere.

Greatness takes time. In acting, you would need a lot of it for preparation, hence it’s important to start early. Based on the tips given in the video, learning your own technique and rehearsing would be your key to success. Personally, I found the first tip fundamental as it covers almost everything you need to deliver your line, and that is learning the intentions and thoughts of the script. Once you’re immersed, you’ll go from there— learning what tone to use, when to pause and sigh, and when to play around and maybe do adlibs. To learn your script ahead of time is the best and only way to thrive on the stage; like a soldier in training camp going into battle.

As someone who prefers to think and analyze before taking action, knowing and studying the script ahead of time is beneficial for me in order to at least ready myself before playing a certain role. To me, a script is like a paint that a painter needs to color their painting. It is the colors that brought the image one would like to portray in their painting. Once the painter or the actor has immersed themselves to the character they chose or were given to, they could finally paint the scenario they envisioned.

In the video, the man mentioned in the 3rd idea wherein one learns the script in a monotonous manner and then the 4th wherein one could play around in order to not lock themselves in a pattern. Among all the tips he mentioned, those two resonates with me the most; I'd first memorize the lines without immersing myself too much before building it up from there and then play around and give the lines and character I'll be portraying more color.

An actor’s greatest deception is convincing the audience that the puppets (the actors) come with no strings attached. When a person is acting, their intention is to portray a character from a story. They want the audience to be so immersed in their narrative that they sometimes forget that the people performing are acting in the first place. In order to do so, actors have to throughly learn their lines and study their script ahead of time. Not only memorizing them, but immersing themselves into the story and their character so that the lines can leave an actor’s mouth as if they were their own. Personally, I think that I would need to use a combination of the techniques shown in the video in order to achieve this.

As a learner who had previous experience in a simple broadway/theater production, it is crucial that you study the script beforehand; not just study but to understand and get a grasp on what is happening in the story. When you have a better understanding of the script, you get to know the characters, the setting, the plot, the mood, all of the elements that is present in the script and that way you will be more familiar and be more confident in portraying your character and also portraying the appropriate emotions. As an aspiring actor, it is very important for me to get to know my role, my character and the whole story to get a better understanding on how will I convey my thoughts, actions, and my emotions flawlessly.
