Dixon’s motivation was simple: Having grown up as the child of a single-parent, low-income family, she knew firsthand what it felt like to go without. With many already struggling, she knew that 2020’s pandemic meant many parents would be paying bills rather than purchasing presents.

“So many of our families don’t have money to get Christmas presents this year. Some parents have lost their jobs, others have had their wages cut back,” Dixon told The Washington Post. “A lot of them already come from low-income families and are below the poverty line.”

As we saw over the year just past, even when things looked their darkest, there’ve been generous people around the globe who stepped up in big ways to fill Santa’s snowy boots time and again. Whether or not you believe in Santa Claus, that spirit of giving has the potential to shine in all of us.

Ben Berman, 27, began baking pizzas and delivering them from his second story apartment to connect with friends at the start of the pandemic. Months later, his hobby evolved into a booming nonprofit that has raised $30,000 to help fight food insecurity and homelessness in Philadelphia.

Berman's passion for cooking for others was inspired by his mother Kerri. Raised in Portland, Maine, Berman grew up learning new recipes from his mom and the importance of gathering around a table to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

"My mom, who's an amazing cook, taught me about food as a love language and a driving force to connect people," Berman told TODAY Food. "I'm never as comfortable as I am with friends around a dinner table."

Berman had fun trying out different crusts and toppings, and decided he could turn it into something more.

Berman launched Good Pizza PHL, and asked his pals to Venmo donations in exchange for pizza. He pays for the ingredients out of his own pocket, and 100 percent of donations go to three charities that help fight food insecurity and homelessness: Philabundance, Project Home, and Share Food Program. He now gets hundreds of requests a week, so Berman chooses 20 people at random to pick up pizza on Sunday nights. "We hit $30,000 before the holidays," he told Today Food. Hugo Lopez-Gatell, the undersecretary of prevention and health promotion under the Health Ministry, made the announcement on Twitter late Monday, saying the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks, or COFEPRIS, licensed the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Lopez-Gatell later said in a press conference that the vaccine could be available in March.

"Very good news the emergency approval of the AstraZeneca vaccine by COFEPRIS!!!! With this, production in Mexico will begin very soon!!!" Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said on Twitter to welcome the development.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is the second COVID-19 vaccine authorized by Mexico, following the Pfizer/BioNTech shot which was approved in early December. Mexico pre-purchased 77.4 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

A COVID-19 vaccine candidate from Chinese pharmaceutical company CanSino Biologics Inc that completed late-stage trials in Mexico also seeks an emergency use authorization in the country. However, Lopez-Gatell clarified on Twitter that "so far no authorization has been granted" and the company has not yet submitted the complete file.

Some 43,960 health professionals have been vaccinated with the first dose so far, according to the Health Ministry.

On the afternoon of Dec. 18, an electrical fire sparked at the W-Underdogs facility in Atlanta, Georgia. One of the nonprofit’s signature programs, The Rescue Team, teaches at-risk kids about compassion and responsibility through rescuing and rehabilitating homeless dogs and cats.

Keith Walker, 53, has done odd jobs for W-Underdogs for several years and was heading there to walk his pit bull, Bravo. He’s been homeless since he was 13 years old, and the nonprofit frequently shelters his dog.

"It feels like it's not all about you, it’s not a 'you' story," Ethan said. "Like they say, ‘Walk a mile in somebody else's shoes,’ you gotta do that and see what they're going through, look at their perspective."
