Student motivation can be challenging! I have heard that in order to actually learn and retain something it must be repeated a minimum of 1,000 times. Whether that is true or not, practice is critical in building long-term skills. When students dedicate time to learning through continual practice that in turn can build their confident as a learner; and that confidence can then be used as motivation.

For students it has become even more challenging to focus on any task longer than 5 minutes. Distributed practice is essential in building long-term skills for students. Using smaller increments of time and checks for understanding can help students learn and retain more information and helps to build confidence in students.

It will help to improve long-term retention. Spacing out practice helps transfer knowledge from short-term to long-term memory, reducing the likelihood of forgetting. It makes it easier for students to master a skill. Revisiting skills over time strengthens neural pathways, making skills more automatic and flexible. When students return to material after a break, they engage in retrieval practice, strengthening connections and deepening understanding. Cramming overwhelms students and leads to surface-level learning, while distributed practice allows for manageable chunks of learning. Lastly, it helps transfer their knowledge. Students who repeatedly apply concepts in different contexts are more likely to use them flexibly in real-world situations.

If this helps improve student motivations to participate actively in the learning, I would say some great practice and learning is about to take place.

Understanding the importance of background knowledge can transform your teaching methods by helping you create more effective, engaging, and equitable learning experiences. Background knowledge, the prior knowledge and experiences students bring to the classroom, serves as a foundation for comprehension, critical thinking, and skill development. When students lack sufficient background knowledge, new information can feel abstract or disconnected, making learning more challenging. When students have relevant background knowledge, they can make connections more easily, leading to deeper comprehension. Assessing students’ prior knowledge helps tailor instruction to their needs. They can compare new information to what they already know, fostering critical thinking.

The saying "use it or lose it" applies here because if you stop using a skill or recalling information it can be lost. When we repeat a task it can also become something automatic that we don't have to think about doing. We can balance it with student motivation by finding ways to make the practice engaging and fun by changing things up. For younger students we can use games to keep them engaged but also get the practice they need.

Unfortunately, as a middle science teacher, I find that the background knowledge students SHOULD have is lacking because there is more of a focus on math and reading up until that point. Teachers at the elementary level feel so much pressure in the areas of math and reading that science goes to the way-side and students get to me in middle school without the background knowledge they need. It's left me in a position to teach the background knowledge myself (and loose instruction time for the "required standards") or just move on and hope the students will get it; neither of which works.
