1. The prompt asks us to demonstrate our understanding and knowledge of creative nonfiction by analyzing or creating our own text.

2. There are 2 options to choose from. Option 1 is traditional, like an essay, where you are analyzing a specific text to explain the effectiveness of the author’s use of literary devices. Option 2 is creating your own creative nonfiction piece that uses literary devices effectively or illustrating how different elements of creative nonfiction are effective through a portfolio, webpage, or newsletter.

3. Option 1 is more appealing because it has more structure which I do well in and can see myself feeling more confident with working in.

4. I’m not too sure what the writer’s brief is or who it is about.

- Gabriela Jaimes

Week 4 / Class Notes on Creative Nonfiction and Project 1

The prompt for Project 1 is to share our understanding and knowledge of Creative Nonfiction in literature.

In Project 1, there are 2 options to choose from for this project. The first option is a literary analysis. This is a more traditional essay where you would have to explain critically and thoughtfully how any of these stories effectively use different literary analysis that help the narrators validate their voices, create community, assert agency, or start a healing process. An example that was given to us is to analyze "White Trash Primer" and explain how the use of point of view effectively or doesn't effectively convey the narrator's intention to bring the audience into the story. We can also mention the use of flashbacks and setting to help bring the narrator's healing process in "To My One Love." We could also choose any other texts that we have read this far in the semester to analyze. The intent of this is to choose a text that is comfortable enough to analyze where we, as the student can put together a developed and organized analysis. The requirements of this assignment is 1500 - 2000 words, one or two images related to your topic of choice, MLA format for in-text citations and work-cited page, a writer's brief info: profile picture and short bio at the end of the article, an to submit an electronic copy to Canvas.

The other option to choose from is option 2. This option is more of a creative route. You could write a personal narrative where you use the second- person POV. You could write a personal narrative in which you describe who you are. using "How It Feels to be Colored Me" as a model. The last option is to create a webpage, tabloid, or portfolio in which you illustrate the different elements we learned in class. This idea is to synthesize the framework, literary devices, contexts, and other aspects of literature that we talked in class about. The requirements for the personal narrative is 1500-2000 words, MLA formatted, no work-cited page, unless you cite outside sources, and to submit an electronic copy to Canvas. The requirements for the webpage, tabloid, or portfolio is to submit a link of it to Canvas, and to attach a reflection page in which you explain the process of this project, the audience, and how it synthesizes our discussions and your understanding of creative nonfiction and the literary analyses of the readings.

The option that seems more appealing to me is the second option. I want to write my own personal narrative. I am more on the creative side of writing and I think that I would enjoy writing something for this prompt, but also to write out a lot of memories.

For the personal narrative option 2, if there is another story that we discussed in class but isn't listed on the prompt, can we model that story instead of the specific listed ones you mentioned?

- Eden Marie Dilinila

The second option allows us to create our own piece of work that is able to display our understanding of the genre.

As someone who takes enjoyment in creative writing, I will be taking the second option. I want to present an experience from my life using creative nonfiction to show my understanding.

I do not have any questions.

-Jayson Aponte

First the prompt asks us to make an understanding or have the clarity to create a piece of our own text of the "Essay" in nonfiction literature.

The two options we were given is option 1 you have to do more of a written analysis which is more like a traditional essay to differentiate the stories and how critically and effective it shows. Option 2 is about your own creative writing approach for an essay like telling your personal story with the steps of creating the nonfiction story like the community, the asserting agency in the middle of the story, the healing process which settles the asserting main points of the story and lastly the author have the self validation to end the story or giving the effect of the tile or to the context to the story of having the knowledge of the authors closure or validation as you call.

For me I'm tempted to do the traditional version because its the obvious easy choice for me or other however I do get intrigue to do the second option because your wring about your personal story but as well as it will be a challenge to share about as you the author or narrator will be presenting in this "essay" in a format towards others.

my concerns of which one will benefit me of how to do this project and I have no others questions at the moment but I hope we get an review of what the project on creative nonfiction.

- Maiya 'May' Finister

The two options we get to choose from are an analysis of one of the creative nonfiction stories, and the other option asks us to demonstrate our understanding through the creation of our own. Honestly, I'm not the greatest writer, but I want to improve especially in creative writing and I think it would be a fun challenge to write my story. So I think ill choose the second option. :)))))

-Isaiah Lagasca
