This book is about a girl named Coraline. Coraline is a little girl who recently moved to a new town and a new house. She loves exploring and adventure. Usually, she goes to visit her neighbors downstairs Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. Coraline thought that they seemed kind of strange, but they were her only friends. One day while she was visiting Miss Forcible and Miss Spink they welcomed her into their house and offered her a cup of tea. Miss Spink revealed to Coraline that she can read her fortune through her tea leaves. Miss Spink reads her leave and tells Coraline that she's in great danger and that she should take this triangle rock with a hole in it because it will help her in the future. When Coraline arrives back at her house her parents are busy with work and don't have time to talk with her. Coraline decides to go exploring around her house because it was raining and her parents were busy. While she's exploring she finds a little door in their extra bedroom, but it's locked. So she asks her mom for the key and opens it, but there's only a brick wall behind it. Coraline's mother tells her that it probably just let to the other flat next door, and they just closed it off. Her mother took the keys back and put them on top of the refrigerator. One day while both of Coraline's parents were gone she grabbed the key from the top of the refrigerator and unlocked the door again, but this time there wasn't a brick wall. She crawled through the door and was very surprised to see that she was still still in her house. Coraline was very confused so went to the kitchen to put the keys back, and she saw her mom. She realized that her mom looked different, she buttons for eyes. Coraline asked who she was and the Lady told her that she was her Other Mother and that she made her lunch. Coraline loved it there, but she had a feeling that something was wrong. The Other Mother also told Coraline that she has to sew buttons onto her eyes if she wants to stay there forever. Coraline's tells her that she'll think about it and went home and went to bed. When she woke up her parents weren't there and she realized that there, but somehow a cat got into her house. This was the same cat from the other world and assumed that the Other Mother was the cause of her parents disappearing. Coraline decides to confront the Other Mother. This makes her very upset and she decides to lock Coraline behind the mirror down the hall until she decides to be a nice daughter. While she ’s in the little room, she sees that there are three kid spirits. The ghosts tell her that the mother just wants her soul and that she has to challenge her and win the game to get her parents and the kids spirit back. So she does what she tells her other mother that if she can find the other kids’ spirits she can go back home and everyone she has trapped can be free, but if she doesn’t the other mother can have her forever. She challenges her Other Mother to a scavenger hunt game. She makes a bet that if she can find all of the three children spirits and her parents, then they can all leave, but if she doesn't can has to stay there forever. Throughout the game Coraline had to face all of the "Other" people trying to scare her off so she couldn't get the spirits, but she was brave enough to get all of the spirits. Coraline just needed to find her spirits. She knew that the Other Mother wasn't playing fair so she came up with a plan. Coraline knew that her parents were in a snow globe in the same room as the little door and the Other Mother. She goes to the room and tricks the Other Mother into opening the door so she could run through it and grab the key. Her plan was a success and she made it through the door with the key and managed to lock the door. Coraline got her parents back, but later that night she had a dream and the spirit children were in it. They told her that the Other Mother had her hand coming to get the key and that she still needs to stop her. Coraline comes up with another plan. She decides to set up a fake picnic with the key over the well so that that hand will see her. This plan works and the hand falls into the well. She covers the well with a big stone and in the end, Coraline was finally free from the Other Mother and can have a good night sleep.

This book takes place in Coraline's house. it also takes place downstairs and upstairs (where her neighbors live) and the garden around the house. This is very important to the plot of the story because Coraline's other world that the Other Mother made is based on her real world.
