Background information: Duffy was born in Glasgow Scotland in December 23rd, 1955 to her parents Mary Black and Frank Duffy, and lived there until she was six, then moving to Staffard England. Throughout Duffy’s childhood she went to convent schools and began publishing her poetry at the age of 14. She was raised with her four younger brothers in Staffordshire in the West Midlands of England to a Roman Catholic family in the Gorbals where her father worked as a fitter for the West Midlands of England. Later on attending the Liverpool University and graduating with a degree in philosophy in 1977.

After attending Liverpool University, Duffy began working and publishing several books as well as traveling to reach and teach poetry. She later began to work as a poetry critic for The Guardian from 1988 to 1989 and as an editor for the poetry magazine Ambit. In 1996 she started lecturing in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University, later becoming the creative director of the Writing School.

Carol Ann Duffy was considered for the position of poet laureate in 1999, but Prime Minister Tony Blair was concerned her homosexuality would not be well-received by the public. She was chosen as the poet laureate after Andrew Motion’s term ended in 2009. She received accolades such as the Scottish Arts Council Award, the Whitbread Book Award for poetry, and the T.S Eliot Prize. She was also named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE). She was praised for her ability to explore complex issues in adjectives and accessible way.
