It can be in a personal way, like just wanting to have a good impression on others. Or it can be something more complex, like touching controversial topics and wanting to make a point and want others to have an opinion on that. 
Like the two post examples, they are trying to make an impression on people who see these posts and getting something like "social approvement". And in the example on the activists we see people who have a mentality and ideas about a movement, and they are trying to get a message through with this interaction in social media.
