When commissioned a tattoo design for a client I would first ask them for their initial ideas and any references they may have. I also ask if the tattoo will be in colour and what the scale of it will be (as too much detail will blur over time if the tattoo is small). After gathering this information I can give them a rough estimate of what the design will cost.

I then begin my research stage, gathering references and working on the design with the client's idea in my own style. After showing them the initial sketch they can ask for adjustments to the design. Finally, I created a finished lined version of the tattoo that is clear for the tattoo artist to work on.

After the client is happy with the design and it has been delivered to them in whatever format they require (typically a JPEG) I then collect payment.

This was the process for the tattoos I designed for both of my clients.

This initial idea came about after our collective had applied for a previous mural application for ... which was designed by Flora based on the year of the rabbit, for the lunar new year. We began by meeting with Zoe, our coordinator for the mural shop display, and discussed what past students have done, what our initial ideas were, and taking a look around the shop to inspire us. This is because the purpose of the mural is to get people to look into the shop and see the products.

After several joyride meetings, we began to collaborate on ideas. We decided that as the mural will be up and displayed in May that we would each create a summer flower illustration in a similar style (non-lineart). We then brought this to our meeting and created several collaborative murals until we found what worked for us. This was then sent to Zoe for review. We then began to prepare an official pitch to her and the team and Not Just A Shop.

As a collective, we also applied to many different things such as the 17&Central shopping center mural proposal in Walthamstow. Taking management in this application I was in charge of organising fellow peers to collaborate in idea generation and responses to the application including things such as budget.

We also took a vote on ideas for the mural and Flora received the most positive feedback. Flora created a beautiful sketch for the proposed mural based on the Lunar new year, the Year of the Rabbit.

Though this application was unsuccessful this design was very useful in helping us land another commission with Not Just A Shop to paint a mural in their window.

In this commission, I designed a PC case design for a friend. This was challenging as I had to dismantle the case and spray paint inside it. I then had to take off the back of the case and illustrated this with a white Posca acrylic marker pen. I planned this design in light of their prompts and was inspired by the world of gaming. I enjoyed this design process as I have not illustrated this type of surface before.

This made me realise that though I have been commissioned to do a variety of different creative things, I can apply my art and illustration to many different objects and jobs not exclusive to the 2D digital art I usually stick to. This is what inspired me to look for other wise I can apply my illustrations, and so I asked them if I could do a mural on their family business' shutters to which they gladly accepted.

This made me learn new things in the freelancing process such as working up a contract so the client is not constantly asking me things where I am not being paid extra for this time.

Immersive exhibitions are my favourite type of exhibition and I was amazed by the sensory and audio-filled lasers and light displayed here. The exhibition was to transform the audience's 'existential' experience which I was invested in. I loved the interaction and narrative behind each piece. I also enjoyed walking around and immersing myself. Each installation was different and on a different scale, the first was an entire warehouse room, almost like a rave in which you could fit thousands of people. The endless space made it feel empty yet the loud vibrations and sounds filled the void. For some other light shows you could sit on beanbags, lay down, and watch the show on the ceiling. This range and adaptability of each one was a transformative experience.

Creating a climate concsious sellable product for Not Just A Shop

For my first idea, I found it difficult to come up with an idea and product, as I want to create a physical product to pitch, which was out of my expertise area. After several talks with tutors and seeing other peers' work, I finally decided to create a series of stamps. These stamps were of a daisy, nettles, and a dandelion flower. I wanted to create more awareness of forging and what we can do to make it a more active choice in our diet whilst being respectful to not disrupt the habitats and growth of the current plants and creatures in that area. I selected these 3 as they are very common and there are accessible recipes for each, such as nettle tea and dandelion honey. If I were to continue this project in the future I would like to promote it by illustrating a recipe book for foraging recipes and doing tutorials of me foraging and cooking these recipes.

After finishing designing these 3 elements, which I had to learn illustrator to do as this is the only way to laser cut a design on stamps, I went to the 3D workshop. With a technician, I discussed what I wanted and I used the scrap materials to experiment with the first few stamps. I found that these were much too big of a scale and for the next series of stamps I decided to create a smaller size. I laser cut in total 9 stamps, using all recycled materials. I also engraved them on the bag of the stamps for a nice finishing quality.

After discussion with the technician, from several visits to the 3D workshop, I found that she also did DPS several years ago and that she also was on the illustration course. She explained to me that the 3D workshop was a great way to create a different way to create through illustration.

After this, I then began to think about sustainable packaging for my product. At first, I wanted to create a box to place my stamps in, but then I decided that I wanted to create packaging that would also fit my theme. Thus I decided to sew 9 pouches using scrap material from an old skirt. These pouches would not only serve as packaging for the stamps but could also be used when people are foraging for plants etc.

Ceramics Society

5 week course

During my 5 week course at the Peckham Levels Studio I learnt many core skills to help me on my journey in using cermaics.

1. Learning how throw. I learn how to first mould the clay ball so there were no air bubbles in the clay. Then throwing the clay on the wheel and learning to centre it on the wheel, learning key hand positions. I then learnt how to manioulate they clay into the desired shape with my hands and the aid of tools.

2. Hand build- in this method there were long cylinders of clay which we gradually build up into our desired bowls, making sure to smooth the edges so no air bubbles would arise. I then decided to be ambitious and sculpt an octopus emerging from the bowl. This was not only challenging because of its weight but extremely fun.

3. Molds- I learned how to properly rolls out the clay to its correct length and press it in the mold. I created a plate.

4. Slips and handles- After the clay had airdried we went back in with water and a sponge to smooth out surfaces, use various tools to engrave or make shapes, and used slips to attach handles to mugs

5. Again after the airdry we then went in with decoration. This is when I learned about glazes and top coats. I also realised how important it was to apply them in the correct order and make sure they were fully mixed before dipping. The glaze almost instantly dried and appeared white. When fired the true beauty of each colour appeared.

Results:
1 hand-built bowl sculpture
3 mugs
1 plate
2 dishes

This process it had motivated me to start applying my design skills to ceramics and making with clay in my own time. I also would love to gain more experience in further workshops and eventually join a local studio to create my own work.

This is what inspired me to look for otherwise I can apply my illustrations, and so I asked them if I could do a mural on their family business' shutters to which they gladly accepted.

The owners did not want anything specific and told me I could pitch any design to them. Therefore, as the family is from Pakistan I wanted to create an illustration that captured and celebrated their culture, bringing ideas of traditional clothing, patterns, and colours together. I pitched 2 coloured illustrations and my initial idea was selected.

The metal shutters were curved and had holes in them. This was hard to paint on and get precise and clean lines. I tackled this by constantly stepping back from my work (as it is large scale) and covering the windows beneath.
-On rainy days, this was quite often where I could not paint. On these days I had to wait out but prepare myself for the next time I could paint.
-out in public by myself, though the owners were always on site there would be a few times were I would be alone, this was challenging as there were a few people walking by so I had to watch my back in case of any incidents occurring, though I felt safe as local businesses either side of the shop would often come to check on me
