Pre-University Life:
Karen Healey was born in 1981, on Whangerei, New Zealand.
Karen had an ordinary life as a child, albeit with a gifted writing ability. She passed through several schools such as St Joseph’s Primary School, Oamaru Intermediate School and Waitaki Girls’ High School.

Kiwi University Life and JET Program in Japan:
Initially, she went to the University of Canterbury, in New Zealand. At this point, she had wanted to be a lawyer, but had no idea what it entailed. Eventually though, Karen decided this wasn't for her and turned back to her roots, and did a double major in English and Classics, and eventually got her masters in those respective subjects. By this point, she decided she wanted to see the world so she applied for the JET program and went to teach English in Japan for two years, which gave her valuable experience in the field.

Australian University Life:
She returned to Australia and decided to apply for various university PhD programs. Melbourne University, a well-known university in Australia, and additionally, her top choice, accepted her for classes.

By Georgina Simpson

When we wake is a book about a 16-year-old girl frozen in time and reawaken 100 years later. Out enjoying a day with her friends, the main character Tegan is shot and killed by a sniper aiming for the Prime Minister. She had donated her body to science and this causes her to be subject to a cryogenics treatment. She is frozen and brought back 100 years into the future. After meeting friends and battling enemies she finds out the real reason behind everything and we say farewell to the teen. When we Wake is supposed to tell us to wake up about the problems we are facing in this world. It tries to tell us what might happen if we don’t start fixing things soon. The title is connected to the book but has a double meaning. It means that when we wake up to the troubles we are facing it may be worse than it already seems. This is an excellent book and is amazing for young teens to read. It shows happiness but also doubt and it definitely catches the reader’s attention.

Abdi Taalib:

By Isaac Driessen
Age - Teen years
Character Description - African ancestry, from the city of Djibouti. He is bald, with a skin colour with the shade of 'rich earth.'
Direct Characterisation:
'Though; he looked as if he was bored of the situation and wasn't planning to be my bestie anytime soon'
Seems to be indifferent about certain things, perhaps due to his self-preservative attitude.
'His face looked mildly disgusted, as if he wasn't sure why he was doing it.'
Proves that while self-preservative, his heart and willingness to help others is also a contributing factor to Abdi.
Indirect Characterisation:
Seems to be self-preservative, as even after helping Tegan, he refuses to be connected with her in anyway publicly. Though, he does have a kind heart, as he chose to help her with her computer and later defending her from Soren.
Impact on other characters:
He is linked mostly with Tegan, as he is the subject of her crush later in the book.
Impact on the plot:
Abdi is a crucial character to the plot, as he is Tegan's love interest, he helps immensely in finding out what Dawson and the Australian Army/Government is up to later in the book. If he disappeared, numerous things wouldn't have occurred and Tegan probably would've had a much different path in the plot.
Impact on the theme:
Characters are vehicles for themes, in Abdi's case, it would be Courage. Abdi
is the brave representation of a character in this novel, displaying in many scenes that he has a heart of a lion.
Colonel Dawson:
By Isaac Driessen
Age - 40s-60s (Possibly 70s?)
Character Description - He is an Australian Army soldier, more specifically a colonel. Cares for Tegan, for her value, not for her as a person. He is patronising, and occasionally condescending to Tegan, and others (like Marie.)
Direct Characterisation:
‘Kinda skinny with a zillion wrinkles in his olive skin, but he was clearly in charge’
The author is saying that while he is old and seemingly weak, he is respected and revered as a leader.
‘Dawson had been thrown a complete tizzy when I’d jumped off the building because it wasn’t in his plans’
This implies that Dawson hates any change in a routine/plan. He likes things set out as he seen them in his mind.
Indirect Characterisation:
He's clearly the main antagonist of this novel (the other being The Father) as judged by his actions later in the book when Tegan rages in the interview, and he responds in a violent and malicious manner befitting that of his true personality.
Impact on other characters:
Colonel Dawson is a major antagonist, as such, his actions impact numerous people, one example is Tegan, as he willing to revive her 100 years later so that he can test human's survivabilty in a cryonic coma, to replicate it in new settlers to habitable planets.
Impact on the plot:
As Colonel Dawson is the main antaginist in this novel, the plot would change on a huge scale if he did not exist in this novel, like on the scale of Tegan not being revived at all. Though, perhaps if Dawson hadn't intervened, someone else in the Australian Army/Government would've done the exact same thing.
Impact on the theme:
Colonel Dawson is the 'vehicle' for the Truth V Deception theme, he displays this by lying to Tegan and Marie for most of the novel, by doing this he is hiding the truth.
Bethari Miyahputri:
By Isaac Driessen
Age - Teen years
Character Description:
Daughter of one of Dawson's army colleagues, yet she is not the army/government's puppet, rather the opposite. Bethari is a Muslim and a journalist fighting for female journalism rights. She was allowed to meet with Tegan, provided that she speak to nobody about her. She assumed that people from the 21st century were racist to Muslims, this was the reason of her seemingly snobby, closed off attitude on Tegan and Bethari's first meeting.
Direct Characterisation:
'"I wear this as a symbol of my faith," she announced. "I'm Muslim" I nodded. "And no matter what my mother said, I need to know right away, do you have a problem with that?"
This shows that Bethari is not fond of beating around the bush, asking immediately if she had any problems of herself being Muslim.
"I could report the confiscation to Media Monitor," she said. Muscles jumped in Zaneisha's jaw, but at the next set of traffic lights, she reached for her EarRing. "Gregor. Change of plans. Ms. Ogletti's going to church"
This brings out Bethari's journalist side, virtually blackmailing Zaneisha so that Tegan can go to church, this also proves on how far Bethari is willing to go to help her friend.
Indirect Characterisation:
Bethari is a journalist, meaning that she isn't afraid to ask the hard questions. She's also loyal to those who deserve it, as mentioned in Direct Characterisation when she 'blackmailed' Zaneisha. The lengths she goes for friends also shows who she is as a person, one example would be later in the book when she gets caught by the army/government while in their base, while helping her friend do something that's not strictly legal. She's also a skilled hacker, as shown many times in this novel.
Impact on other characters:
Bethari was an excellent friend to Tegan, her skills and friendship gave Tegan numerous opportunities and developed both Bethari and Tegan herself as a relatable and developed character.
Impact on the plot:
Bethari's skills were crucial to the plot, her numerous skills in hacking, fierce and effective questioning skills, knowledge of the legal and illegal things in the 22nd century and other things.
Impact on the theme:
Bethari is a more minor character in the novel, yet instead focusing on one theme, Bethari embodies Truth V Deception and Courage. As a journalist, she is always searching for the truth, and she discovers it later in the novel, but she doesn't run, instead she puts her brave foot forward and tries to fix the problem.

Tegan Oglitetti By Georgina Simpson Age – 16 years Character description – Australian, from Melbourne. She has long dark brown hair with lightly tan skin. After the cryonic treatment she is bald and develops short scraggly hair. Direct Characterisation – clear skin, high cheekbones. Free running kept me fit and muscly and I had long black hair. Indirect characterisation – Tegan seems very set forward. She loves her family and friends and adores her boyfriend Dalmar. This suggests that she would not adjust to being taken from her present life and woken in the future which unfortunately for her was her fate. Impact on other characters – Tegan is the main character in the novel and is linked to every character worth mentioning. Impact on the plot – the whole story line is about her journey through discovering the horrors of why she is really there. Without Tegan there would be no plot and the story would have no meaning. It would be just one confusing (and boring) mess about what might happen in the future.

Joph By Georgina Simpson
Age – 16
Character description – a slim girl the same age as Tegan, with shaggy light brown hair and skin a few shades darker than Tegan.

Direct characterisation – “I was beginning to suspect that Joph’s serenity came from less-than-natural causes” from Tegan’s perspective.

Indirect characterisation – Joph seems like the sort of girl who would hide away at parties but still get in on the action. She seems very enclosed but also very out there at the same tie.

Impact on other characters – Joph is essential in creating Tegan to become the person she needs to be in order to win her fight with the Inheritors of the Earth. She will give her advice on what she needs to have in order to stay safe on her journey.

Impact on the plot – Later on in the story Joph becomes a victim in the situation and this forces Tegan to work harder and ensure she gets done what she needs to do. Without a character like Joph in the novel Tegan would not have enough fire and fight to accomplish what she does

Name: Dr Marie Carmen (Cate McNair)
Age: late 30’s

Character description

Dr Marie Carmen or just Marie is a middle-aged woman who works hard for her success, she dedicates her life to her job which his looking after Teagan.

Direct characterisation
The author has told us that shes a independent who works hard. she dresses formally well, brown hair and is middle aged.

Indirect characterisation
As you have read in the book about her you can predict that she’s an independent woman who loves her job and always puts it first.

How does this Character impact on others?
Marie impacts on Teagan’s life at lot, Marie is almost like mother to her and she made it less difficult for Teagan to adjust to this new world.

Name: Father (unknown) (by Cate McNair
Age: unkown

Character description
Teagan's father isn't mentioned in the novel as much, At the beginning of the novel she kisses the photo of him he's obviously missed and loved.
Direct Characterization
The author hasn't told much description about him, although he isn't mentioned in the as much but Teagan brings him up in stories and she obviously loves him
Indirect Characterisation
As what you have read the father wasn't around in Teagan's life and she didn't know him for long but she still loves him.
How does this Character impact on others ?
The father impacts on Teagan's life, Teagan misses him and thinks that hes a inspiration to her

The temperatures are rising higher sometimes they can’t handle it. There are some solutions that they came up with to protect them from the heat/sun is underground house so then the house isn’t hot 24/7 and save money on power. A reason why they don’t have red meat is because the population of animals breathing out carbon dioxide which makes the temperatures rise. Technology is more advanced than 2027. Gregor is desperate enough to hide the truth that he shoots the IoE member (Inheritor of the Earth) and with that, keeping the world’s problems from being told. Tegan discovers the bad side of the Australian Government, the brutality they use to keep a secret is astounding, to her, an example would be this line, ‘But the greed of your masters exceeds his bounty. Ask. Ask them about the Ark Pro- ‘There was a sound so loud it was no sound at all, and his chest exploded into chunks of red’ while at the Church. When We Wake is a great example of a chilling yet very realistic future of Australia and other nations. Additionally, it captures a dystopian theme flawlessly, making the reader think that perhaps it is a utopian world when first introduced to the new world, but, it is anything but, and certain characters like Bethari seem to recognise that.
