The guide, based on Virgil in the original Divine comedy was the person who guided Dante through inferno and Purgatorio through till Paradiso.

In our adaptation of inferno I changed Virgil to be someone more ethnic, as Virgil (and The Guide) reside in the first circle of hell: Limbo.

Limbo is in a short summary, is the circle in hell where the souls of the unbaptised, the ones who did not believe in the Christian God, or those who were born before Christ gave his life. Those who were not sinful enough to warrant damnation, but did not accept Christ. This is why Limbo is considered not much of a punishment per say, but a place for these souls to simply exist.

People that Dante wrote into Limbo are people such as: Plato, Virgil himself, Socrates, Aristotle, Orpheus etc.

I wrote this scene as a moment to facilitate some physical theatre, with the background song of Radiohead's Daydreaming. In which the characters confrontation with each other is cut short by an earth quake in hell which forces everyone to be forced into the gestures associated with each circle as part of the main plot pushers which I wrote is: Hell is collapsing.

We used some of phoebe's movement workshops on the seven deadly sins as well as the circles of hell.

But this scene was Written by me Alec, Marijose was movement director and Alex Rat was Director as well as the drums for gesture changing.

Meaning wise, this scene represents natural disaster, facilitated by the plot point that hell is collapsing, its a moment that cuts the emotional build up with a quake, which makes it unclear what exactly happened to our characters after. It forces them to go through the punishment of each circle before collapsing in on itself almost, leaving us with our final bit: To Kill an Angel.

To kill an Angel, I wrote as the climax of the piece. Which gives some purpose and motivation to the characters.

The angel represents innocence, and so the deal serves not only as a function and interpretation of satan pulling a middle finger to God, but also to prove that the damned souls are well and truly deserving to be in Inferno.

Does the deal exist? maybe once but the fool believes it does, but satan is nowhere to be found.

During the final monologue where the guide recounts their memories in life, I have satan appear in the aftermath of the Hellquake, he moves in response to the recounting, and feels the feelings of the guide, which links to the punishment of satan themselves.

Satans punishment is to feel everything every damned soul feels individually and at the same time. Symbolic of trauma and how emotionally complex we go through. Paradoxical but abstract.

I think the conflict for satan themselves, is that they simultaneously hate and enjoy the pain, it is reflected in their movement. In my intention I believe the feelings inform the movement like a dance. The pain is real but there is catharsis and pleasure in making it art.

More importantly Satan much like the people in limbo, are not necessarily the most sinful people in hell, Lucifer especially. But in my mind not even Lucifer condones the killing of children, so when they feel in that moment what the guide feels part of it is genuine. As angels represent the innocence and purity of God, to kill an Angel is almost killing a child.

What i love most about making this scene is how what's set in stone facilitates what we desired to be abstract, there is enough to come up with something yourself, but it is likely that your interpretation isn't wrong.

The shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese instrument derived/related from traditional Chinese flutes (Xiao I believe? a very different flute though) and historically were used by beggar monks, who travelled with this and their straw hats which covered their whole head, why they played for money.

This eventually became an instrument prominently used by monks for meditation, and to this day is being encouraged to potentially be used for orchestral playing purposes. which is possible by using more contemporary techniques of playing as it was traditionally played in simple ways.

It was also used as a self defence weapon as the root of the bamboo was very sturdy. perfect for on the road :)

The Parent in my mind, is important to show how while some people commit sins for the wrong reasons, there are those that commit sin for the right ones. Parents should be protective and defensive when it comes to their children, and some willing to do anything to provide and keep their child alive. Life is cruel and so we change accordingly. Innocence can be a privilege, reserved to those who simply dealt better cards in life. So the Parent, represents those who are dealt rough cards in life. but will do what they believe is right and best for their family or their children's survival.
