Typography is an integral part of visual art that adds to the potential meanings of a multimodal ensemble. Variations of typography in a text can suggest different meanings and interpretations of it, not only considering what’s written, but also how it’s presented. Some features of typography are the weigh (thin/bold), color, size, slant (italic), frame, and formality.

There are types of orientation: vertical, horizontal, square, among others.Horizontal also known as landscape formats (wider than they are tall), are more familiar, soothing and comfortable because it aligns with our binocular plane (we orient ourselves horizontally to the world). So horizontal images look more natural and lifelike. Vertical also known as portrait formats (taller than they are wide), are more dynamic and energetic, some books use this orientation to suggest a specific meaning or theme, and it catches the reader’s attention immediately because of its unusual style and orientation.

In visual art, dots, lines, and shapes are emphasized through various factors such as weight, size, and position. Dots, being the smallest basic element, can vary in size, placement, color, and number. They can connect with one another, leading the eye in specific directions. The closer the dots are to each other, the stronger the connection. Dots can be used in large numbers for shading effects or as individual entities to draw attention to specific areas on a canvas.

A dot represents an individual point in space, establishing a location and creating a figure on a ground. When dots are spread apart, they remain separate but derive meaning from the distance between them.
