In People Watching by Conan Gray, the speaker is Conan Gray. Throughout his life, he has always watched other couples fall in love and he has never felt that way about anyone. The occasion is when he was in his first semester of college. Every day he would go to a certain café and this couple would be there. In the music video, we see Conan at the café watching couples come and go. The purpose of Conan writing this song was to express his anger of always having to watch people fall in love instead of experiencing it himself. The main audience that Conan is speaking to is himself, but also he could be speaking to anyone who feels the same way as him. The subjects are being lonely, a desire to be in love, and being jealous of other people being in love. In the video and lyrics, the tone that Conan portrays overall is a sad and lonely feel.

Conan Gray acting as the speaker attempts to express his anger to himself that he has always had to watch others fall in love and never has experienced it himself. He uses the appeals of logos and pathos in both the lyrics and music video. In analyzing the lyrics and video, it appears that his use of appeals is effective in convincing his intended audience.

Lyrics first appeal - Logos

The first appeal that we see in the lyrics of People Watching is logos. Throughout the song, Conan is describing a certain couple in detail. We see this when he says: "They're counting months they've been together almost 49". He decides to say 49 months instead of 4 years; because couples always try and make the time they've been together sound longer. Throughout the first verse, we see other facts about the couple, such as: "They met in class for metaphysical philosophy". This is another bit of information that is a fact from the couple. Later in the song, Conan says: "Cut people out like tags on my clothing". Instead of being a fact about the couple, he now says a fact about himself. If he cuts people out of his life because he is scared of love, he will never find it.

Lyrics second appeal - Pathos

People Watching has many lyrics that provoke emotion. After talking about the couple he had been observing he says "and I'm happy for them". This causes us to feel sympathy for him, or relate to him if we are in the same situation. Watching others fall in love while you're sitting alone with your heartbreak can be the hardest thing ever. It can be helpful to know you're not the only one feeling that way. Conan further expands this feeling of loneliness when he says "Life feels so monotone, but I still keep hoping". This is almost the opposite of ethos, where he is stating that life has no emotion when you're lonely and it is stripped of fun. However, it still provides an emotional appeal to the listener.

In conclusion, Conan was able to express his feelings to himself, and others who are in the same situation, with logos and pathos. He tapped into emotions of jealousy, longing, and anger throughout the video and lyrics. He also provided factual lyrics from a certain couple he watched and connected the video to aspects of his life.
