Separate Location

All ELLs may be given the opportunity to take assessments in a separate location, either individually or in a group, on all assessments.

Alternate Language Editions

ELLs may be given a copy of the assessment in English side-by-side with a copy of the assessment in their home language. They may only write in one booklet, but can read from both language editions. The alternate language editions are available in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, and Spanish. This is not allowed on ELA or English tests.

Bilingual Dictionaries and Glossaries

Students may use a bilingual dictionary or glossary on all tests, so long as the dictionary or glossary only provides a direct translation of the words. They may not provide explanations or definitions of the words.

Oral Translation for Lower-Incidence Languages

If there is no alternate language edition for a particular language, an oral translation may be provided on all assessments except ELA and English assessments. The translation must be a direct translation and the translator can only be given the English-language test up to one hour before the assessment is given.

Writing Responses in Home Language

Students who are using either the alternate language editions or receiving an oral translation of assessments are able to write their responses in their home language, but must be scored by the school.

Time Extension

For regents examinations, schools can provide extra time for ELLs at the school principal's discretion, with input from the ELLs' teachers.

Next Day Completion of Testing

If an ELL is scheduled to take two regents exams in the same day and is receiving extra time, they may complete their regents exam the following day.
