Only later in the novel does the reader find out that the world has succumbed to a man-made global pandemic that was manufactured by Crake.

Jimmy(Snowman) is the main protagonist of the novel "Oryx and Crake", who is deeply in love with Oryx and is best friends with Crake. He is a character that feels out of place within this futuristic society and is described of more of a "word person".

Oryx
Oryx was taken from her home and particpated in various kinds of sex work from a young age. Later on in the novel it is described that she is romantically involved with Jimmy and Crake.

Crake
Crake is a character who can be seen as the antagonist in the novel to an extent, he is a character that is deeply gifted with an understanding and passion for science, so he can be seen as an opposite when compared to Jimmy.

After hearing a voice in his head, he searches for the traits of human existence. He followed the footprints and his excitement exaggerates at the moment when he smells roast meat.However, he was hesitant to approach them because he wonders if they will kill him. The book ends with Snowman thinking, "time to go".The resolution is somewhat incomplete as it stopped at the point where Snowman is hesitant to approach the human beings he found, which leaves the audience with their own imagination of how Snowman’s life will be.
